  • I've used CRC in the last fortnight and have two transactions on my account which seem to be fraud. They're for iTunes and are odd amounts of £10 and £20 in round figures. Has anyone heard reports of this rather than 02/Vodafone?

  • HSBC cancelled my credit card recently due to fraud and reissued a new one, I need to check my transactions.

It's terrible PR to keep silent on this- CRC should have been the first to warn people to check their accounts, pretending nothing is wrong is risible

  • Just looked at original Post title

Watch out mine was a Debit Card.

  • They are posting on on other forums asking customers to contact them directly, but the silence from the cycling news outlets who have massive ad revenue from CRC is telling.

  • This happened to me. I was supposed to be getting my groceries delivered yesterday but the person who picked the order phoned me up saying my debit card had been declined. I phoned my bank, they explained why. Fraudulent transactions, £15 O2 top up in addition to other stuff. Money refunded straight away but it's a pain in the arse as it'll be 7-10 days til I get a new card, and it's the only one I have.
Make sure you have two credit/debit cards in case something like this happens, people!

You should never be using a debit card online.

You're not as protected from fraud and it's YOUR money that goes missing.

    Er - bollocks.

I am protected, that's why the money was instantly refunded.

  • The point is that if there is a dispute with the card issuer over culpability and you'd used a credit card you can withhold payment cos you're billed later, with a debit card it's already gone.

This case the pattern should be pretty clear to the banks so there should be no dispute.

  • also worth noting that it's a good idea to have as little money as possible on a debit card.

i have 2 accounts, one with money and then just shift over 50's as i need them to the account connected to the card

  • Informed by friend who works with them, confirmed by customers

    Check your statements

  • Cheers all, very valid points

And i'll now head off and Close the Stable Door now the Horse has Bolted and done a Runner.

  • Oops sorry boys. (and Hippy)

  • hangs head in shame

Didn't work for me, had my debit card done a while back and found out they had a sort of secret unauthorised overdraft limit. 3 and a half grand went from an account that had pretty much zero to start with before they started to block transactions. That was a while ago tho, they might have changed their procedures by now.

Ouch. Did you get it back?

  • Yes, without much hassle as it happens. Card was being used abroad so would have been quite easy to prove it wasn't me but basically they took my word for it.

Not if you're spending your overdraft.

  • if i used my credit card through paypal could i be affected?

The answer to your question is No. PayPal seem very good in this regard despite their certain draconian policies. However we await PayPal being hacked. It's only a matter of time.

The online store of Ribble Cycles was also repeatedly hacked around two years ago (2009) in a similar fashion. Even then a tell tale sign of "hackings" were loading of mobile phone top-up charges.

  • Just got off the phone with CRC, they apparently don't know how many people were affected (despite claiming a figure 0.1% on their other forum posts) and want people to ring in: *+44 (0)2893343758 (9am-5.30pm). *They'll give you email updates on their ongoing investigations.

Still, I'm pretty exasperated that I've had to find this out serendipitously on a forum instead of receiving direct contact - especially as I was done for over a grand. Thankfully got the money back.

I got done with the ribble one, as did a mate i'd recommended ribble to. I felt like a bit of a twat after that.

  • £699 for John Lewis and £30 Tesco mobile... and yes, ordered through CRC recently.

  • dammit. Just bought a bunch of stuff from there. Let's see what happens...

  • @braker - yes, I've had the round figure iTunes ones before now. check with you bank

  • You reckon a purchase about 2 years ago would be safe? Do they keep card details on file?
