  • Right. We need a polo tourney this summer.

The plan is to try and choose a date which will be sunny enough to enjoy Brighton to it's fullest but before us students all run away.
The idea of playing on the seafront of Jubilee square is nice but impractical so we'll play at PP and have the option of 1 court if the tournament is moderate and 2 if we get more interest.

We need to decide on a date and from there all that needs to happen is talking to the council about getting the courts reserved (we could just stick some signs up and get there early on the day).

We'll get Max involved for advice about set-up and the technical side of running the games and as soon as we have a date we can get the word out to all the South coast teams as well as London, Cambridge, Bristol, Manchester etc.

I suggest a Saturday because it means we can all get pissed afterwards.

Late April/Early May could work. Cambridge are holding a tourney on the 30th April.

    Possible dates:
    April -16th, 23rd
    May - 7th, 14th

    What do we all think?

  • In In In!

This has been on the cards for ages, it doesn't need to be a big fancy thing - it'd just be great to get all the boys and girls down for a sea-side knees up.

I think later is better due to the increased likelihood of sunshine, we all know how glorious this town is in the summer!

I think booking the courts is possible through the council, they offer that facility on their webshite but PP is conspicuously absent. It's our home court so I believe it should be held there. We'd have to get some boards down for the inside of the fences and corners but it's eminently possible.

Nick was saying that he had the connections with the other south coasties, Bournemouth et al. I'll tap him up on FB just now and see what he says.

Build it and they will come!

  • May 14th is the weekend of the great escape festival just to let you know

  • Build it and they will come!

This. London have been waiting for a Brighton tourney, it would be ace...

  • May 7th?

  • I disagree with not going for a prime location, preston park isn't the prettiest place and isn't very Brightony. Today in the polo world, if you want to be taken seriously you have to put on a really good tournament.

The seafront would be amazing, you will need sponsorship though, tbh I would aim at the council and nearby pubs it will bring a lot of custom for them.

You'll need to speak to the LHBPA about the date, as it will need to fit in with other tourneys.

Also housing is important to consider.

I'm not trying to be negative, but if anything in life is worth doing its worth doing well.

Here are places i would put the court.

if you want people to see

or here if you want good games, but its not very central

    http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=google+maps+brighton&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Brighton,+East+Sussex,+United+Kingdom&gl=uk&ll=50.826243,-0.1903&spn=0.002382,0.002197&t=h&z=19

Also will this be a mixer or teams, because if Brighton want to represent they will need to do some training

  • Newington isn't exactly a prime location, PP offers perfect conditions for playing with little work.
I just want to play good polo.

If you're offering to organise this then go ahead but I don't have enough time to take this on unless it's quite simple.

We should either meet at a pub in the week or post-polo discussion next Sunday.

  • I can put people up at mine if it ever comes to that.

I get what both of you are saying, but as with the Brighton Alleycat thing, the organization of these events seems to be the main problem. On the seafront would be mega, but the cost/schedule of putting together a court there would be pretty large.

those guys put on a polo thing in Norwich recently see here...http://www.lfgss.com/thread60078.html

I wouldn't mind helping out, but like Tim I'm pretty time poor until I've finished with dissertation writing, but if a few people were to share the work, I'd throw my hat into the ring so to speak.

  • Have a meeting and get a committed team together (who are willing to put the hours in).

I'd aim to start an annual Brighton tourney if I were you, the organisers could change year-on-year and you'd be encouraging bike polo in Brighton for years to come?

Robin has had loads of info sent on about easily finding sponsors and sourcing a good courts setup... decide what you want from the event and decide how it's best to approach sponsors and councils.

Potentially there could be loads of culture/sport funding available to you (contact Brighton Council, etc, and try to get some pro-cycling folks onboard).

If you need help/advice, then London (and other UK scenes) will send things your way. Just shout.

Good luck, it could be awesome!

  • It will be awesome.

  • I can help to organise but as I work full time I wont have much time to offer, and as we have established weekends arent good for me due to family/DIY commitments. However I will throw hat into the ring, I am happy to call council people etc so lets meet up and draw up a plan.

  • Pub this Thursday?

Either that or Sunday post-polo. I'm good for either.

  • Sounds great! Thursday pub session sounds like a good idea, throw some ideas and opinions around on the best way to do this.

  • Thursday is St.Patricks, whether this makes it better or worse I'm not sure. But I'm down.

  • Thursday is St.Patricks, whether this makes it better or worse I'm not sure. But I'm down.

Perhaps not Fiddlers then, some non-irish themed place. I cant do weekend as going to Boston from Sat to Thursday

  • Thursday evening - 8pm

Either at the Park Crescent or the Rose Hill tavern (sufficiently non-irish places.

Or anywhere else that people can think of which won't be too busy.

  • Rose Hill is right by my hoose, lets go there!!! :)

  • Done.

  • Cool, see you there!

  • I'll try to get down too, but living out of town might get in the way. My immediate thoughts in the meantime:

Date. Needs to be as late as possible for the weather. End of May was amazing weather last year, but it took a while to warm up. June's been scorching for the past 2 or 3 years if my memory serves me right?? When do all you student's get your annual bath/bag of laundry sorted at mummy and daddy's?

Location. My vote would be for Preston Park. Much more suited for an event like this. Parking will be a nightmare near the seafront in both Brighton and Hove. People will have to keep disappearing to put another ticket in the car, retrieve spares and tools etc. That's assuming they can get a space nearby. Loads of FREE parking at PP, and spaces on the road for any more that turn up. I realise that ideally everyone should get the train down, ride to the venue etc...but that isn't going to happen.

Lots of space around PP for spectators/bags/spare bikes etc. Also less wankers around trying to rob anything that isn't screwed down! Much easier to keep an eye on that sort of thing when it's primarily polo heads in the area.

Why try and run before we can walk? If you want this to become an annual event, surely word of mouth is what's going to make that happen. If the logistics take second place to a flash, show off venue, people will think twice about coming back.

Finally. I realise I've only been playing for a few months, but there are a committed hardcore few of us that turn up week in, week out in nearly all weathers. There's been a definite improvement in the standard of play recently, but you can only do much when the same 4/5/6 or so of us turn up on time every week and it's throw in after throw in. There are names I see on this polo thread who I don't think I've met even once in the past six months. Come and play on a Sunday. Lets start forming teams.

  • Also I think we should reserve over 50% of our slots for teams outside of London. There's a definite need for a tournament which doesn't instantly become the LHBPA playing another set of league matches just on different courts.

  • When do all you student's get your annual bath/bag of laundry sorted at mummy and daddy's?
    lol

  • Uni term ends on June 10th. That's the last day of exams (i think) so alot of people will finish before then.
Also, everyone will be mad busy for a month before that.

I still think 7th May is our best bet.

  • 75%. Without checking with The Wife/my diary, I'm down with the 7th. That's not far away though.

  • I'm down with the 7th
