Right, the garmin went potty during the second half of this very brief first go- using a GSC-10 speed and cadence sensor, why is it flicking between real wheel speed and much higher?
-
• #54
Have you taken it out on the road with the cadence sensor so it can auto-calibrate against gps movement data instead of sitting on a turbo where the zeroing readings might confuse it a little? First time I rode with my cadence sensor, after about 30 seconds it beeps up with "wheel size calculated". guessing it finds this harder to do if it's got no data to check against.

I've ridden with it on the road before, although then it was taking the speed from the GPS.
I'll give it a go on the road again and see what it says- mine is the 305 so not nearly as clever as yours I think?

^ TCX works fine too.
You can get turn by turn directions from a TCX file? Like when you start it up it calculates the route and then tells you the road names and when to turn and all that?
Don't you have to add waypoints with turn alerts to do this?

I got weird reading so I entered the wheel size manually and it worked a lot better.

I had a cursory look for how to do that and could not find any where to enter wheel size.
Which garmin do you have?

question for yous.
is it possible to join a pre-plotted course and then follow on from that point?
i.e. not starting at the beginning, meeting the course and then continuing on.
or will the thing just try to redirect me to the beginning?thanks for any help.
on the garmin 800.
-
• #60
Why ask it to direct you at all? Just have the course loaded so you can see when you are on or off course.
(I've only used a 795 though).
it will give me lovely turn by turn turns if i am on course.
that is why. -

^^^ Yes. Sort of. I do it, but I use my Garmin in a weird way, predominantly following Courses not Routes.

i do the same as tom

As well as open street map there is a downloadable **gmapsupp.img ** here http://openmtbmap.org/
This allows off road routing.

Bit dismayed when I switched on my new Garmin to see a few A roads and not much else (pre-purchase research fail). Would have been properly stuck (on the A roads) without the tips in this thread. Thanks. (Obviously 'the don't buy a Garmin' tips came too late).

Plug it in both pc and mac, they don't show up despite being charging by the usb port.
-
• #68
^ in order for it to show up on the computer, you to plug it in and turn it on.
-
• #69
It turn on automatically though.
-
• #70
try it with a different cable, or in a different port. mine went through a phase of having issues on connection..
-

It turn on automatically though.
It will show the charging graphic automatically but you still have to hold the on button until the PC link graphic shows instead.

^this isn't the case for me

I would like to buy a Garmin, it seems like this might not be such a good idea. I am certainly not forking out all that money for something that doesn't work with Macs and is badly supported.
Are there alternatives or have they got the market cornered?

by buddy has used his garmin with his mac for years, no probs. so does pascalo on here I believe. scoble's experience isn't necessarily typical.
-

To be fair, my issue is that it doesn't show up regardless of PC or Mac, 6pt's right, my experience however annoying isn't typical (and I brought a new european map for £50).
will see how it is when i take out the memory card.
I've found that navigating on the 705 is very good most of the time IF you remember to turn off recalculate route. If you don't it can on occasion tell you to go left instead of right if mapmyride doesn't agree with garmins maps.
Its a bit ropey in the city sometimes but seems to be perfect on longer rides outside zones 1 and 2. Or at least that is my experience.
