  • Don't want to know how many people have just clicked agreed like they mindlessly click agree on everything when installing.

  • Still need one? I've got two Garmin flush out front mounts sitting around in boxes.

  • Has anyone set up their Garmin for use when running? I've got an 800 that I'd like to use when running but doubt it'll be accurate enough on foot, unless there are specific settings people have used?

  • I have used one for hiking and it seems to record ok, you need to turn auto pause off in the settings.

  • but doubt it'll be accurate enough on foot

Why? Can you adjust data recording to 1-sec intervals? It'll reduce battery-life, but improve accuracy. It's a bit bulky though - use the Strava app on phone instead?

  • DCrainmaker: "One question that’s often asked is: “Can I use it for running?”. The answer is: Sorta. The Edge 800 will record the GPS information just fine, along with heart rate. However, it’ll show your speed in MPH (or KPH) and not in the standard Minutes/Mile pace format. Also, it’s not quite designed for your wrist, but if you pickup the cheap 310XT quick release kit, it’ll snap into that just fine."

  • Just get a Fenix 5 + and bin the dedicated cycle computer.

Unless you are serious audaxing / transcontinentaling

The running / multi sport kit is way better than the cycling specific stuff in my experience

  • I'll give that a go - haven't owned the garmin for that long so still trying to get used to it. My phone flaps about in my pocket but the garmin hides away fine in a rear jersey pocket.

  • I have a Forerunner 620 watch that I'm happy to sell to you, let me know!

  • I lost my etrex 20 on a ride last weekend. sad times. time for something different.

which of these is best for long MTB rides, from one day to one week? charge from dynamo hub or power bank. will be ridden in rain a fair bit, and don't want anything that relies on a phone.

will always be following a GPX track only. never do "routes".

    • Edge 510
    • Edge 520
    • Edge Touring Plus
    • Edge 800
    • Edge 810
  • Can only comment on the 800 and 810.

    Fuck the 810
The 800 is solid if you know its quirks but for MTB? I'd have thought etrex maybe better option.

  • ok
I have had three etrex 20s in 5 years, just want something different.

  • I'd definitely go for an Edge 1000 over the 800. I can't comment on the other models. Do you want all the bike computer stuff ?

  • no. I just want to follow a line. and have faster panning and better mounts than the etrex

  • I reckon the 800 is faster than my etrex and the 1000 is quite a bit faster still. The 1030 seems to have gone backwards a bit. All the Edge mounts are much better than most of the etrex mounts.

  • Fenix 5+

  • will be ridden in rain a fair bit

I've had 2 800s, 2 810s and 1 1000 (amongst others) and they've all suffered from water penetration when riding in the rain for long periods. In my experience no Garmin USB port is genuinely waterproof, and they will all die if ridden in the rain for long enough. On Transalp 2017, which was prodigiously squelchy, I managed to see off 2 810s and a 1000.

  • I go swimming wearing my Fenix

  • Although to be fair the strap broke after about a billion hours and it fell off my wrist on to the road

    The road came off worse

  • The 800 has proved to be more waterproof than the 1000. The 1030 hasn't been used enough to fuck it up but I assume it's as bad as the others. etrex are better than Edge for water ingress.

  • damn
my etrex 20s never suffered any water problems, and I really soaked them for many days

  • yeah, I picked it up, remember! on NLD.

  • Yeah - get a Fenix but just replace the strap when bits of rubber start falling off it.

  • Wouldn't want to navigate via a Fenix though. I've tried with my Forerunner 935 and it's no fun.

For anything under 12h where I don't need to navigate and just want to record stuff (GPS, HR, Power) I use my watch (Forerunner 935).

For anything else (>12h or need to navigate) I use my old Edge 705 that keeps on trucking (have replaced the battery myself once though). No water ingress problems despite being used on lots of long wet rides with USB power packs plugged in.
