Some, not much.
Usually when Garmin fucks out it's gone.

Has anyone had the issue where a track in RWGPS dumped onto the Garmin causes it to route back to the start from some point?
So, for a lot of recent audaxes I'd have a 200k ride but it would say 500k to go because some random point would be 'calculated' and route back to the start adding heaps of distance. Once you get past that point on the course the distance to go is back to normal but I'd like to stop this happening.

Had a few incidents with my 1000 recently where I'm using turn by turn and it has a "route calculation error" and starts calculating the turns again. Real PITA.

Previously used
http://garmin.openstreetmap.nlto get maps onto my 520. Turns out there's a 4.5 day delay on getting maps at the moment, and I need the maps for a ride tomorrow. Any alternatives out there ?

Loads.
Google OSM maps and find one of the fixed country maps.

I've used http://www.velomap.org before. Maps are a little more cycle focused which may screw up on-device routing (roads have different priorities, it's explained on the site somewhere with the best settings to use).

File recovery freeware found the activity files, but they were corrupt and I wasn't going to find any data to extract from them.
Performed a factory reset, hopefully it'll be capable of saving rides again. I suppose the safest way to get any data backed up will be to Bluetooth it to Strava on my phone as soon as it's saved, unfortunately, given that this is a Garmin, that only seems to work about 25% of the time.

I'd like to stop this happening.
Stop doing audaxii?

Is the general consensus that there's no point upgrading from an 800 in battery life/mapping terms?

Cross post from Strava thread
About 1 in 3 rides not updloading from Garmin to Strava - bad time data messages.
I have tried using the online resource to fix fit files to no avail.
How can I stop this happening in future?

Could be a problem with the gmaptz.img file, i.e. the time map.
First try using the webupdater to see if it offers you a time zone map update if it does then take it.
If it does not then mount the Edge to the computer and delete the following file
Garmin\gmaptz.img (This is the time zone map)
Run the Webupdater after deleting the file and it will reinstall the map for you. -

Cheers
Have followed your instructions, fingers crossed it'll solve the issue.
Much appreciated

Discussed a few pages back, but remember that the delay on openstreetmap.nl only applies to custom maps, not e.g. the whole UK

Not wishing to tempt fate, but the 3.60 update to my eTrex touch 30t has resulted in the device actually being responsive to the touch screen for the first time ever.
Not mentioned in the changelog of course
Changes made from version 3.50 to 3.60:
Fixed issue where auto-start setting would not work.
Fixed issue where activities would fail to sync to GCM after completing.
Fixed issue where touching the screen would wake up the unit when it was in battery save mode. -

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good external power source that can fit into a top tube bag to power a Garmin for longer rides? The Garmin battery lasts for about 10 hours and won't last for a 200km+ ride.

IIRC the garmin battery is about 1000 mAh, so get an Anker battery bank based on that. The smallest are approx 3500 mAh.

Super - thank you

While we are at it do you have any idea how to stop my Garmin 800 going all screen bright when it recognises or looses external power?
-
• #4270
Unfortunately no. Could try put the display settings to night only. But that is only a guess
-
• #4271
I'd prefer not to go back to riding up and down A roads all day.

The 1000 is better than the 800 in mapping terms, until it gets wet.
The 1000 is worse than the 800 in battery terms, much worse when it gets wet. -

I like the Garmin batteries, they strap to bars nicely, but are expensive and there's higher capacity options now in the form of Anker and Zendure.
-
• #4274
The 1000 does the same thing. It's fucking stupid.
Maybe if we all email their support desk they'll actually fix this stupid issue. -
• #4275
Thanks for confirming that. Mine goes constantly on/off as well now sometimes.
On the weekend I only used the battery when I was stationary at controls.
