Reading into the Wahoo Elemnt now and from the looks of things they are really on top of their software game. It all looks like a very slick experience for downloading routes from Strava, syncing stuff, setting up, etc.
AND it will upload to Garmin connect! It's nice that they won't punish me for owning a competitor's device.
I'm pretty sure Wahoo is going to get my money now, cheers @amey

AND it will upload to Garmin connect!
Not anymore. Garmin withdrew the facility for 3rd party integration some time ago.
Never mind, #Strava4lyf

Ugh, FFS. I suppose that's hardly surprising though, considering that if you want to develop anything that uses the Garmin Connect API they will charge you $5000 just to have a go.
They should be paying developers, not the other way around! At least make the API open like all the successful software companies do.
But yes, Strava, exactly

Its a company that has zero idea about software. Go with Wahoo you wont regret. I am surprised that they arent sponsoring any pro team yet specifically for elemnt.
-
• #4106
Their sponsorship of you is costing them enough.

Connect IQ is free, isn't it? If they don't open their website API it will simply die and everyone will be on Strava and that's that so it's their own fault.
-
• #4109
Maybe so, but isn't that just for adding little weather widgets and such like? Looks like a nice idea but it's kind of fluff, no?
I'm more talking about letting users just pipe their data to/from whichever service they feel like. Seems like Garmin just isn't on board with that sort of stuff.

• #4110
It's not like I really actually want to have everything in Garmin Connect as it's a bit pants. But if the Wahoo was at least allowed to upload data to it then I would have all my running, cycling and general health tracking shiz in one place.

I think being able to add custom stuff to your Garmin head unit is more valuable than accessing anything provided by their Connect API but that's because I don't really use Connect. I do my analysis in WKO. I'm not sure what you can do with their API as I've never had a requirement that might need it. Does it do anything amazing? Have any third parties actually used it for something useful?

So my 510 went nuts and switched itself off a few miles into a ride yesterday after seeming to work fine. I turned it back on (normal way, no long press or resets or anything) to find that it'd deleted all bike profiles, sensors and was no longer paired with my phone, as well as losing the few miles I'd ridden. However, it had remembered and instantly picked up my HRM and didn't lose my user profile (age/weight etc).
Battery was on about 90% and after it found satellites again it was ok for the rest of the ride. Got home and realised it'd lost bluetooth, so tried a few times to pair it again. Eventually got it to pair and all was well, but this morning it's recorded the commute and decided not to remember yesterday's pairing or let me pair it again. It won't save its 'friendly name' for itself, nor will it let me save any new bike profiles.
WTF garmin?

510 issues - get rid

Bloody Garmin issues generally. If I had a bit more money I'd be looking at the Wahoo Elemnt for sure, indeed I still may do in future.

My Edge 520 is always jumping to the compass screen when I go past places like Whitehall and Buck Palace. It's really annoying.
I suppose there are some funky anti-terror measures going on around there with strong jamming fields or the like - or do I just have a temperamental unit?

Posting here for my own benefit.
This is an etrex mount for 20/30/30x that apparently works, unlike the shitty one I bought off Amazon

Recently my automatic uploads from Garmin to Strava result in rides ranging from 0.2k to 0.8k in distance while Garmin Connect does display correct 60k to 130k distances.
Anyone having similar problems?
Already tried unpairing the services but still same.

• #4118
I used to have one of those. Worked 99% of the time but very occasionally would still eject the Garmin after going over a pothole or something so worth having a lanyard clipped around the garmin and the frame.

I have a non-Garmin one apparently and these are almost the same but just different enough to be fucking useless at holding the units whereas guys on YACF were saying they have to tape over the rubber knob just to make it possible to remove the unit. That's the kind of Garmin retention I want.
I'm still undecided if I should take it. But I like the option of an AA-powered Garmin if I lose my ability to charge my Edge and mobile phone.

Anyone got experience of using a Wahoo Elemnt for longer audax type rides? Particularly turn by turn navigation. My patience with Garmins has worn rather thin and I'm seriously tempted to try something else.
-
• #4121
I have it as well and it's super shit. I have a cable tie i use to hold the garmin on it as well as a lanyard for security
-
• #4122
I've used an Elemnt for up to 12 hours (including stopping for lunch etc), using the navigation. That's about as long as a full charge will last.
I've not tried to charge it up on the move as yet.
-

Would aim to use it on 600k rides and LEL, so would definitely need to charge via dynamo hub on the way. Hopefully it's a bit less quirky doing this than garmins. Feedback online seems so much more positive than Garmins, but have struggled to find much about longer distances riding with them.

Buy direct from them, they have a rapha style no questions asked 30 day returns you just have to send the box back to Belgium.

Didn't @DarrenFranks switch to one just before TCR when his Garmin started playing up (aka: acting like a Garmin)?
Seems good, but you need a mobile signal to do ad-hoc navigation
Which is fine probably for most of us.
