look at the 820 forum on the Garmin site before pulling the trigger
Good tip, will do.

I love my Wahoo Elemnt and their continuous update, however it's not quite there to the Garmin, one of the feature I miss (admittedly just the one) is the ability to pause - turn off - turn on - unpause the ride.

Waste of time. Just buy the 1000 if you tired of the 800.

I don't like the idea of no SD card in the 820.
On one hand Garmin can't make waterproof SD slots but on the other hand they're even worse at reliable software writing so you need to get used to factory resets...

why are you buying garmin instead of wahoo?!

Not used Wahoo, and DC Rainmaker says it's not quite there in form factor and integrations. I'm definitely going sensor mad, and the Garmins seem to handle this better... again according to DC Rainmaker.

I found the last-but-one firmware update for the 820 made a huge improvement. Still takes a little while to get a gps signal sometimes, though.

Wahoo don't do maps and shit yet do they?
I'd love to use something else but until they have the features they're still 2nd place option.

Had one job to do...one job...

On screen maps? Ad hoc navigation? I thought you were stuck following a route like Garmin 500 series units?

In that case I'll wait until I have the bike and power meter, and will then purchase a Wahoo to see how well it works and return it if there are compatibility issues with whatever PM I buy, or anything else isn't working well.
As for Android love... on my phone yes, but most of the battery savings that Garmin can achieve comes from their ownership of the whole platform. I am totally unconvinced that Wahoo can get similar times even with a screen size reduction, they don't own enough of the underlying access to the OS to tune this without taking on kernel developers (of which there are too few, and none that I know at bike companies).
From what I've seen review wise this seems to be backed up by experience... Wahoo only sees 8-10 hours of battery life, whereas my Edge 800 has comfortably done 12 hours and still had charge in it when I got home.

Edge 800
Thats where Garmin peaked.
Its all downhill from there.
My argument is mainly UE and bloated old school nokia/microsoft business model. Garmin needs to die or cost £50 max.

Wahoo is the future.
But if I buy an Edge 820 or 1000, or a Windows machine and a 520... then I'm fine with buying a Wahoo in the future when they nail the battery life and few remaining integrations and features.
I just don't think they have it all right now, but am open to be proven wrong.

You are right but they iterate much quicker than garmin and on the same piece of hardware.
I have edge 800 that I won on ebay for £85 2 years ago and it has been solid but once that dies I will not give my money to garmin.

Nah, 1000 is better than 800.
-
• #3995
For me battery life is now irrelevant since none of them last 24hrs+ without external power anyway.
-
• #3996
Do any allow charging whilst in use?
(Note: This may be a stupid question, I haven't checked any)
-
• #3997
Compare "maps" though...
vs.
-
• #3998
Yes, I run my 800 and 1000 on external power - battery or dynamo hub.
-
• #3999
Stupid question. My 800 finishes the longish rides fully loaded.

I can post up a proper report later (on phone right now) but you might want to have a look at the 820 forum on the Garmin site before pulling the trigger. It's getting a fairly relentless slagging - I've put 3000miles into mine and can confirm it is an absolute dog's dinner at the moment (although I appreciate it might still be the least bad option for you - Garmin had me over a barrel too!)
