I'm trying to get previous rides recorded on a 1000, on to Strava. This is fine going forward as it says they'll be automatically synced but can't find an option for rides recorded pre linking with Strava. Is it possible?
I tried uploading directly using the Garmin Communicator Plug-in, but noticed that once they've been uploaded to Garmin connect, they disappear from the device..
EDIT: I think I've done it but seems a bit backwards. Export original from Garmin connect >> drag activity back on to device >> use plug in to manually upload to Strava.
So I guess my question is, is there an option to stop activities automatically deleting from the device?

Are you sure that your activities are being deleted?.
What do you see if you plug in your garmin and browse to the activities folder using your systems file manager?Mine looks like this but note that I created my own archive folders for previous years.

An empty folder. Its even deleted (or possibly hid) the ones I put back on earlier.

Yet another reason not to use garmin connect software.

Garmin Express includes an option to “Erase data on this device after successfully syncing”, which will automatically delete rides that you have recorded on your Garmin GPS unit, including Edge/Forerunner/etc devices, immediately after these rides have been synced to Garmin Connect. If you have this option turned on, you will receive the message “There are no activities saved on this device” when you go to our Upload page and try to sync your latest rides. If you receive this message, and believe you should have rides stored on the device, it is possible the Garmin Express configuration is responsible for this issue.
To see if this is the cause, and resolve the issue, follow these steps:
Open Garmin Express Make sure the device you are concerned with is selected in the device selection box in the top-left of Garmin Express Click “Device” (located in the top-right), also highlighted in the screenshot below Scroll down until you see the option “Erase data on this device after successfully syncing”, also highlighted in the screenshot below If this checkbox is checked – that is the source of your issue – make sure to uncheck it!

Does anyone have a Vector pedal pod that they no longer need? Perhaps you upgraded to version 2, or have an unneeded spare. I'm after one. They're no longer made and are out of stock everywhere I look.

Well the 810 is going back. Even with proper maps it locked up during a turbo session today with no navigation, nothing. Fucking junk.

Logged Garmin 810 in their system for warranty.
They emailed me back about doing a master reset.
I email them back explaining I've done this twice already.
Let's see where this goes...

so in answer to my query, Garmin's aren't all they are cracked up to be?
-
• #2285
...they are the best, though they are the worst (cause there isn't alternatives with better ...I think).
-
• #2287
so what's the best of a bad garmin bunch then better to get the latest one (1000) or stick with the tried and tested (810)?
-
• #2288
Of the two, I'd go for the 810. The screen on the 1000 is much nicer, but is also incredibly annoying if it's raining or if you sweat as profusely as I do, as it keeps thinking that drops of rain/sweat are finger presses, and then locks the screen.

i have had the Edge touring for over a year and over 10 k. i also use it for navigation and basic data recording, still haven't experienced any crash with it.
at a significantly cheaper price than the upper models, you get the same navigation and route-finding features. -

Edge touring
Doesn't work with powermeters so is a 'no go' for a lot of us.
-
• #2291
I would have said the touring is all I need except for the fact that I think (following some bikefit advice) I may need a cadence sensor to check I'm not grinding too much. It is annoying to have to spend basically double just to get some very basic stats, but there you go.

• #2292
I've got no worries about power meters I just want to be able to plan routes and have a garmin direct me from point a to b without too many wobbles, and being able to find satellites without taking over a minute...

Did you see that Wahoo RFLKT that Dammit posted? It talks to your phone, so all you need is a smartphone and a battery for the headunit. That'd give you up to maybe 9hrs depending on phone, phone use, etc. You could get an external battery for the phone in your jersey pocket too if going longer.

Get an Edge, if it's so reliable, and then buy a tiny Forerunner unit for displaing power.

£40 posted for world champions. -

Whatever you do, do Not let the garmin choose your routing.
A to B routes on the edge series are abysmal at least with the etrex series they will allow you to choose numerous intermediate points if planning routes on the device unlike the edge series that only allow you to choose an end point.
Much better to plan routes off the device using one of the many websites available.Such as ridewithgps.com

well yes the touring does just that - navigation, the touring Plus does have heart rate communication via the Ant add-on, but not cadence...
i guess the plus with the touring is the touchscreen in comparison with a bryton -

saw a couple of amazon reviews that weren't that impressed with the touring, how easy is it to use, and to get a quick GPS signal?
-
• #2299
pretty easy to use.
To drop a gpx/tcx file and use it as a course is super simple and reliable.
To find a route on the go is not so reliable for a road bike as it will favor cycle paths, so it won't pick a direct/road surfaced route. re-calculation follows the same principle to it will suggest alternative routes on the go, but if you carry on your way, it'll re-calculate your way.re-Gps signal : on a normal day, it finds the signal almost instantly. i usually turn it on before opening the door, and by the time i'm clipped in it's locked. of course sometimes on a cloudy day or under overshadowing buildings it takes longer, up to 30 secs maybe ? but in my experience it never failed to find it.
I can see why people leave those reviews, but it's mostly down to their inability to make a mental connection between the arrow on the screen and the real world : ) -

Projects got suspended today. Boo!
I'm using my 800 maps with the 810 and it actually navigates now. Might spring for new Garmin maps.
