Your Garmin help, please

Hi just wondering what is the benefit of using Garmin BaseCamp instead of copying the files over directly to the GPS' file structure?

I basically followed the exact steps (including installing the UK base maps) on DC Rainmaker's blog: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/05/download-garmin-705800810.html

Your map and OS may not be updated, Garmin Express is an app that basically update the software.

The main advantage of BaseCamp is that you can view the maps from the Garmin on it, a good way of ensuring the route follow the map.

GPX track or route, the edge series treat them the same, the etrex series can differentiate between them and use them in different ways.
GPX tracks are slightly preferable as it is possible to hit the waypoint limit on a gpx route. This does not apply to gpx tracks.

Thanks - installed Garmin Express and now sync/updating. Currently says ">3hours remaining" (!)

Ignore that, it's usually quicker than that.

OK so overnight I took the following steps:

• Factory reset the Edge Touring unit
  
• Updated the maps via Garmin Express (maps installed on SD card)
  
• Re-downloaded fresh courses from ridewithgps.com and exported .GPX (track) files
  
• Copied the .gpx files to the garmin device memory (not SD)
  
  

This morning's commute, I turned the Garmin on and it automatically found a course - as one of the .gpx files I exported was "home to work". As I was cycling it was giving me turn-by-turn prompts, however, STILL 35-40 ft off. As I'm approaching a road it's still telling me I've got 35-40 ft left before the turn.

Any further suggestions?

Burn it with fire?

DC's 605 has done some weirdness - will record rides and replay them in the device's history, but they won't show up in Finder and Garmin Connect / Strava can't see them. I deleted a load of old activities on the assumption that it had run out of memory, but you think it would tell you that...

Anyone experienced this before?

How are your routing options set? Ensure lock on road is off.

Unfortunately this didn't work :( still have a 30-40 ft differential delay before the actual turn. Any other thoughts?

Return the product to the reseller in exchange for a new one.

Does anyone know how to get Chrome to recognise the existence of Garmin Communicator?

Communicator doesn't ever appear in the Extensions list.

Chrome seems to deny the existence of Shockwave in a similar way.

What device are you running Chrome on? Chromebook, pc, mac ?

Yes. I'm on an Intel Mac (which Communicator 4.2.0 requires).

Have you tried using Firefox or Safari, to see if it is a Chrome issue?

Chrome

Chrome blocks plugins by default, and will prompt to allow them on pages that use plugins. The prompt displays a diagram of the page action icon (puzzle piece with a red x) in the top right corner. Select the page action icon and choose Always allow plugins on software.garmin.com. Refreshing the page should then allow the plugin to load. To allow the plugin to load without prompting on each page:

Open Chrome
Type about:plugins in the address bar
Press Return
Locate the Garmin Communicator Plugin
Select the Always Allow box
Restart Chrome

It seems Garmin may have dropped Communicator in favour of Express for Chrome according to Garmin Forums chatter.

Express syncs Strava and Trainingpeaks when I connect a device with a new activity. So that takes care of uploading. Occasionally I have to use Garmin's Connect site to get a shared route. On these occasions my only option is Send To Device – which still requires Communicator.

I guess Garmin didn't think about that?
