Dude on SingleTrack forum reckons Veho Pebble lets the 500/800 continue to run whilst they recharge. They're 3x capacity of Garmin External Pack and 1/3rd the price but not sure how water-proof they are and they're bulkier so not the best for on-bike mounting.

thanks hippy I'm going to check them out
I'm wondering though whether the battery pack was the problem. two other guys on the ride used different ones from mine, one was charging while riding, all three 800's failed.

Noob question.
I have a Garmin 810 and have done a few rides with previously plotted routes. Each time I have had any number of issues with it either A, saying I'm going in the wrong direction on an out-and-back route (my question here is whether there is a way to select which direction you're going in) or B, telling me to U-turn to go all the way back to the start, usually when I have gone off route for whatever reason (my question here is whether I can scroll through the way-points to the nearest and then continue the route from there).
I've been getting around this my simply calling up the route on the map and then seeing where I am in relation to it, which turns out to be quite a bit more reliable so might just use that function instead (/CSB)

Dont bother doing out and back.
Just do out. And then just follow the blue line home. Or there is an option to retrace route if you look for it, not 100% sure where it is on the course menu.

turn-by-turn navigation takes a lot of time to recalculate after you miss a turn.
I never use that function, just display the route on the map in a green (best visible for me most of the time) line. no hassle, consumes much less battery time and if you zoom in to about 80m you can see the turns well in time -

I know quite a few people have problems with out and back routes and also with ones that cross over. My usual recommendation is to split the route into two at the end point and make it two separate routes.

Thanks for the responses. Peter, yes, that sounds like the easiest and best solution. I like using the sat nav function with a post code to reach a destination with directions, but when I've plotted a route, so long as I can see that I'm on it, that's all that's really needed.
I had used GPX viewer on the iPhone a few times which is a similar, but less elegant approach - and you're prone to having the battery die of course.
Cheers!

Trying to send Basecamp Route to Nuvi gps and getting
"problem preparing GeoCaches for transfer"
Any ideas?

What nuvi model are you on - I've fiddled with it but didn't succeed. Couldn't find a menu on the Nuvi to load the GPX I've send to it.

I don't think that you can send a gpx route. You can send a gpx consisting of numerous waypoints which the nuvi will translate into POI's.
(Points Of Interest )If it is a gpx track or route file you are sending it may consist of thousands of track points which the nuvi may be trying to translate to poi's. Rather than the tens that would normally be in a poi category.

2598 I think. I copied the GPX files over with basecamp - some of them fail to copy though - even though they are fine in Basecamp they don't copy - WTF?
I found the menu I need on the GPS too, it's under Apps and then Trips or something.

This might be why some of the gpx files are failing but some work. Stupid bloody devices.

Anyone know how many Courses you can have on an Edge 800
-
• #1166
My 800 has not got the battery life it once had. Am thinking of passing it on to the other half for MTB use as we never ride for a whole day off road.
Trying to decide if the 1000 is really worth the extra money for the route planning and ability to show caller ID and messages. Whereas the 810 has longer battery life.

• #1167
The 1000 has smaller battery than the 800 so it was immediately scratched from my 'upgrade' list.

Here's the video showing GPX files moved to moto satnav. The icons are different for Nuvi but it's similar process.

Appreciated - the video confirmed that my Nuvi model isn't compatible with gpx import.

who uses openstreetmaps? how big a file is the entire uk?

On a OSM sidenote, you can choose the level of detail (zoom level) in case you have limited space. Might not be possible on a Garmin unit, oh well.

About 450-500mb

Seriously, is it that small? So you don't even need a big micro sd card?

City navigator europe is about 3gb. Generally something like a 4 or 8 gb card will fit most peoples needs.
Courses are in the region of about 100 or so kb so space is not an issue for them..

Fucking Garmin pieces of shit.
The Nuvi lies about ETA. Not. Even. Close.
The bike one takes a perfect Basecamp route and then fucks it - sending you up some totally different route. Fuck you Garmin engineers.
I use a 'proper' Garmin external battery pack. I've never tried it with anything else.
Are there any higher capacity packs that mount as nicely as the Garmin/Powermonkey ones?
