Things I Think About When I Cycle...

  • Just got out on the bike today and its a gorgeous day and I was wondering what other people think about when they cycle. Personally I use the time to make lists of things I've got to do, thinking about the work I'll be doing that day, song lyrics, and letting the brain chew on things which I haven't been able to work out previously. Misheard song lyrics, remembering that person's name, that shop where I was going to buy that thing, or the recipe for some dish or other.

Is your cycling time, a space for you to think about nothing at all, or everything at once...

  • Can I predict BMMF's response:

    1. Is my bike/fit in perfect harmony?
    2. Am I on target with my current training regime?
    3. Goto 1.
  • My response is generally:

    • that guy's running a red, hope he gets fined soon.
    • I love this bike
    • Battersea park/power station/westminster/st. paul's looks amazing today.
    • that guy's a douche.

    On longer rides it's generally:

    • will I ever be as good as these guys?
    • no.
  • Not sure really. Forget to think about it whilst cycling, and have forgotten by then time I get to work/home.

    Staying alive must feature though.

  • is good or getting creative ideas

  • I think about the current traffic conditions and any upcoming hazards, not much else...

  • If I just kept cycling, how long could I go before i got bored.
    Usually.

  • Nothing really. I'm looking around, watching traffic, checking for hazards, looking ahead ...

As far as thinking about anything in any structured way is concerned, the answer is nothing :-) My mobile meditation session?

  • []Left foot.
    [
    ]Right foot.

    are you blonde? ducks

  • death... usually death

  • Can I predict BMMF's response:

    1. Is my bike/fit in perfect harmony?
    2. Am I on target with my current training regime?
    3. Goto 1.

Wrong. The answer to the first 2 questions is always yes, so I don't have to think about that shit when I'm riding.

In town - usually a miasma of sensory input, which I attend to as best I can.

In the lanes - usually, "this is fucking fun!", "this is fucking fast!", "if I can just keep this up until point X…", "I am outside of time itself", "it is fucking beautiful around here", "I'm hungry".

  • i was thinking about southerly winds today.
damn breezy out there but lovely and sunny.

  • cambridge:

    Wheee!
    Oh look, a bird.
Whoa, look out for that car/ped...
    Wheee!
    Bit windy innit?
    Sky looks nice.
    Wheee!
    That's a nice tree shadow.
    Look.
    Wheee!
    Damn missed the train.
    Circles, do circles.
My handlebars are too far forward.
Ha ha! No hands! I'm flyyyyyyying!!!

    london:

    Wheee!
    Steady, steady, look, look, look.
Whoa, watch out for that car/ped.
    Fucking potholes.
I don't want to die today.
    Where am I?
    Look, look, look.
    Wheee!
    Oh, I recognise this street.
    Fuck, massive junction/roundabout ahead.
Look, look, look. Can they see me?
I don't want to die today.
    Fucking potholes.
    Wheee!
I love bridges! Ha! Crossing the river ftw!
    Whee!
    What's going on up ahead?
    Look, look, look.
    Fucking potholes.
    etc.

  • "Shut up, legs"
(Actually, nothing. Intermittent registering of pain maybe. My head is completely empty and my brain pretty much shuts down when cycling. Not suited to group riding, me)

  • whatever the voices tell me to think... or do.

  • hmm, wonder what my cadence is?

  • “Kill him...they’ll not catch you...he deserves it...you’ll get away with it...”

  • I don't think when I ride.
    I feel.

  • feel the rhythm, feel the ride.

  • I think about the children. Will nobody else please think about the children?

  • Usually in the evenings.. Why has the wind changed to completely the opposite direction it was blowing in the morning?

  • Usually in the evenings.. Why has the wind changed to completely the opposite direction it was blowing in the morning?

Why is this always the case? Dicks me right off.

  • it's 'cos yer going so fast innit.

  • God i love cycling
Is that person about to step out?
That cars not indicating but lane position and speed suggests they might turn
    She's fit
Potholes better swing out/go down right of traffic
    That's a nice bike.
Why didn't i put my mudguard on? My ass is getting soaked.
    Cycling is so good.

  • Bah headwind/sidewind.
    much less often Oooh tailwind.
