Good idea - but beware the wrath of GA2G...

Cheers. I really want to get a fit, but the two main names that come up are around £200-250, which I really can't afford.
Finding good info on here is a bit of a drawn out task, so I thought a list was a good idea.
I'm sure GA2G will be ok with it, the layout is similar.

Would be nice to have a FAQ type of thing. For DIY'ers.
Best bits of advice I've read on here and other forums, were to carry a multitool on the first couple rides to adjust position on-the-fly (Hippy), and to check if your bars eclipse your front hub when riding in your preferred position (very rough, but helpful). How do I calculate Saddle height?
How do I calculate Saddle fore-aft?
What is the maximum recommended height of a Headset spacer stack?
Where should my cleats be positioned?
What width bar should I use for road riding?
What length cranks should I use?
What is ETT?
What is HTA?
What is STA? -

don't forget the specialized BG fitters at places like sigma. just because they have the big 'S' as part of their accreditation doesn't mean they should be dismissed as not being a professional fit.
personally i prefer the footbed wedge system over cleat shims as it's easier to change the varus/valgus angle or swap between shoes.

Check out Steve Hogg's blog posts for all kinds of info on fitting; Scherrit is just back from training with him in Australia.

he also has put loads of free articles on his website (clicky pics for PDF)

I had a Specialized BG fit done at Steel's in Gosforth (near Newcastle) a week or so ago.
I'd highly recommend them. Took about 2.5 hours in total, lots of discussion, measuring, tweaking for bike and setting up the cleats on a new pair of shoes. Got it dialled in as close as we could and I left with a few sheets with the details down so that I could set up my other bikes to match. I'll now spend the next week or two seeing how I get on and he wants me to go back for refinements and we keep at it until it's perfect, or as close as possible.
It turns out that I'm super flexible and have no issues with injuries that need to be catered for so the fit was all about getting the most power down. I went out the next day and it was like I'd had a new pair of legs fitted!
At £120 I think it's probably the cheapest option too. Definitely worth it imo. They had the option of footbeds or cleat shims, but luckily I didn't need either.

would love to have this done... can't afford it though ;(
Trying to slowly tweak into my new bike but don't feel it's right yet-I get really numb hands very quickly as I'm putting too much weight through my arms, and long rides = stiff back , which could just be lack of fitness though.
Has anyone tried cyclelab or complete physio? Might be able to scrape together the dosh for their prices...

Why are people getting bike fits done? So they can commute to work more efficiently?
-
• #11
I'm doing a fair few sportives this year, and have really bad knees from years of running and a history of back problems. Even if it were just for commuting more efficiently/comfortably, it would be worth it and will ultimately make riding the bike more enjoyable especially over longer distances.

Specialized BG added.
It would be good if people (like Sanddancer has) could recommend any particular ones that they found especially good.
Anyone got any more thoughts on Smallfury's idea?

To avoid long term injury, i've had problems with my left knee and my lower back all my life and would like to be able to cycle for as long as possible.
I'm also training for the Etape and a few other sportives so I am spending a LOT more time in the saddle - getting a fitting seemed like a sensible thing to do.

Also track/road/TT specific bike fits are available from most qualified coaches working in those fields. BC level 3 coaches do a fair bit of study on bike fit. Also might be more realistically priced than some of those^
I know both RPM coaching and Fast Track coaching do track specific fits for riders.

Why are people getting bike fits done? So they can ride your mum more efficiently?
ftfy ;)
Ummm... I guess everyone has there's their own reasons. Personally I hang on every word DJ says so it makes more sense to get the fit before buying my Serotta, rather than after.
When I first started riding I thought I needed a 55cm, now I'm down to 53mm. My fixed fits quite well, but I've slowly moved my saddle further and further back, changed the bar angle, etc. I'm really struggling to work out the best position.
I want a to build a new road bike and start doing more road riding this summer. Ideally around 50-150miles quite regularly. I'd like a frame that I'll keep, so making sure that I'm buying one that will fit well is important. Especially as it will be a decent chunk of my current cashflow. I'm also selling my cx bike and at some point I plan to replace that. So the numbers would be good for that too.
I know that your position changes slightly over time, with temperature and flexibility, etc. but fundamentally the frame's going to be the same.
Well that's what I think. Anyway.

I'll add some answers.
That would be nice. The point is that there are different ways of doing things, and that it would be good to have these collected together. The way in which all these DIY bike fit calculations step on each others toes, should demonstrate tha a proper bike fit is a worthy investment. While it could help those unwilling, or unable, to spend out on one, get a better fitting bike.

Haha.
I've actually been doing this lately. Ordered some 3/4 bibs inspired by a post of his.
Would have ordered a merino/sportswool top, based on his recommendation, too.I'm not sure how I should feel about this.

You should feel slightly ashamed. I know I do. But from time-to-time he does make valid points.
I agree. That's why I put the on-line section on and asked for links for things like the stem calc's. I had a quick search at the weekend and found this brightspoke one, that seems ok.
So if anyone's got some websites they often use to check these things, please let me know. I know somewhere on here I saw a downloadable excel that gave you stem, seatpost, crank, etc. I'll see if I can find it.

I think I'm going to sort out my track bike fit at some point this year. RPM how much does RPM Coaching charge for a track bike fit??

I suffer back pain, but you wouldn't know because I had a fitting done specifically to minimise damage, ease symptoms and to give me the chance of riding for a long long time without it being an issue.
It's been effective, and so from my point of view it's an absolute bargain.
I did later get custom build bikes, but only because the bike fitting made such a difference to a stock frame that it beggars the question about what can be achieved if a new bike were to perfectly replicate your fitting. In answer to that question... it's sublime.

That calculator is a starting point. All my bikes have almost an extra cm in height.

I have now included Condor as they do separate bike fits as well as being included as part of a purchase. However, I have left out any others who just do it solely as part of bike sales.
Please let me know if there are any I've missed, equally I've only included the few outside London that got mentioned on other threads.
The same goes for on-line fit calculators. Personally I think that it would be really useful to have a few of these. Also I know there are a couple of things like stem calculators about.
