  • im sorry but i doubt that this build would cost four to five hundred quid.

    €400-€500 = £339-£424

    technically

  • Yeah I know it was on the expensive side but I was happy enough to pay for it. I didn't have the time to get it together myself either so I did pay for convenience too. Either way I don't think there's any such thing as a cheap NJS build anymore.

Also the € vs £ difference is worth noting and we get taxed to the balls here in Ireland too so I was stung on import tax on most of the parts.

  • njs is overpriced wank anyway. I have some Sugino 75 cranks in the parts bin as they are so damn heavy I haven't been able manage to lift them out again. Tragic.

  • Oh yeah man of course, I know I could have found cheaper parts elsewhere and gone for some secondhand stuff but I really wanted that new car smell ;) I did go a little crazy ono some parts too, the monster chainring was a bit silly.

You could definitely build a super nice bike sub one grand but I don't think you could build a full NJS build now for that price. NJS stuff just has way to much hipster tax on it.

But not unless you know where to 'compromise', i.e.: why spend over a grand on a frame?... get a good used, try and find if you know anyone going to Japan, i dunno. I know of someone now in Japan, visiting, with the intention of buying a frame, or maybe 2. Just an example, if you're really into getting it -> find solutions, I for one try instead of dishing out dorrah I don't have... even if I had... ;)
Some of you will just read this like, "yeah, but I want it there, that minute..." fair enough, pay the price. :)
My builds do tend to take some time. But I don't care much, maybe if you do it'll be quicker.

Another example, taking advantage of sales, TFG is on SALE for loads of NJS bits (colored)... you just need to utfB ;D

    Overpriced maybe, Wank - No.
C'mon Gav, put any DA cranks next to... anything else...

A point to note is that once components are coloured/anodised, they lose their NJS accreditation. (If that's what you want other than simply being Japanese.) They'll still have the stamp though...

The three main areas to consider (I found) when building an NJS bike are the rear hub (some frames take a narrower 110mm hub) the rail spacing in the saddle (it may be 30mm instead of 44mm) and the size of the seatpost. 27.2mm is the most common but they may be 26.8mm or 27.0mm.

Also, the only NJS approved rims (available new) are Araya Gold 16B which are tubs and have to be laced in a 36 cross 4 pattern - all spokes are 305mm. (It's worth noting that although Campagnolo produced an NJS accredited groupset, their 'Keirin' rims were never NJS.)

Of course, you could always go for something totally different, like an Arrow (if you can find one.)

  • ^But that's exactly where I say you should compromise. Do you really want to build a full NJS bike for London? NO, unless you hang
it on the wall and ride on Sundays in the local velodrome... which I find hard to believe. Compromise in getting a really nice wheel-set.
Araya clinchers with Suntour, or DA, and ride it like so many others. Or go Tubular and get the 16b Gold. I wouldn't, big waste of rims...
Being colored or not that's each one's decision to like or not... I had some bits, 'tis was ok.
About losing the NJS accreditation... >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> That's where you start being a bit pedantic. Lol... C'mon, get real.

I normally make a distinction; You can have a Keirin inspired bike and ride it, or you can have a NJS bike and hang it on the wall.
    Simples.

  • I have an NJS bike that I ride.

For true practicality though, nuknow's right.

  • They'll still have the stamp though...

They dont. All my Black Nitto parts have no stamp and the Sugino 75 cranks are punched out.

Quality is still the same though, which is excellent!

  • 2009 is on the phone for you, what do you want me to tell them?

    モシモシ!

  • there's a kalavinka and a panasonic on here for <£400, presume you've seen them?
kalavinka comes with headset and bb.

    there are some 75s too.

£400 for a deep v wheelset? fuck me..

  • No chance for <£1,000, my recently finished build was somewhere between €2,000 - €2,500 and the frame was a secondhand Fort. That was using mostly NJS parts. Most people think it looks shit too.

    .

  • havnt got bars yet though

    There you go.

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=19555

    total: £1519.74

  • they'd look sweet with an njs build as well

  • What stem razuuu?

  • nitto jaguar

  • So Nitto bars.

  • I thought you'd be more exotic.

  • i thought you'd be more punctual, but oh how the sun fades on the moonlit buildings. Twas no more

  • I dare you to be more exotic.

  • two cups of sugar and none of your business is how exotic I'll be, ey john jack

  • Well, that went well...

  • I guess we won't see any exotic coming outta you then..

  • it went as well as the withering fall that comes after an exhilarating lift plucked from a monster torn in the morning, somethings are meant but can't be forced upon, learn that well and you shall find whats done and quickly loose whats begun
