"I will also always play to the whistle and get on with the game at all times taking any advantage when need be."
I agree with everything you have said Todd but this is why a reff should make thmselves know, early on in a game.
When the league started a lot of games started with the reff having a chat with all the players. This seems to have stopped but its a great idea and gets everyone on the same page. -

Yeah people ref different but each ref should lay down some guidelines before the game.
Like lifting mallets and where they stand on the matter.
It helps the players too as I certainly don't want to be punished and sitting out for a penalty when I've taken a keepers mallet as part of a tactical play which I thought fair.
If I know a ref is not gonna put up with it I won't risk it.It's one thing attempting fair play and taking care of your own playing game but useful to know where the ref stands on some things.
It's up to them to cool the game down where they see appropriate and prevent things recurring that are dangerous or unfair, whatever the players think or say.
I thought yesterdays game was great. There was equal faults and battling and the ref chose to let the game continue. I would've too. I didn't hear any warning called which might have been useful however.
I just struggle with the game being called dirty by the ref afterwards if nothing was actually said at the time and no calls or warnings were made by them.
That means they saw a dirty game and let it be that way which is wrong. -

Funny to hear you try to claim that refs to don't have power, Mr Binbox.
I don't ref anymore, precisely because of bullshit like this ^.

+1, I haven't reffed a proper game since Greif Masters 1. Because people (not even players) are too busy shitting on the ref.
-

I wonder if maybe we could either have a reffing thread or some kind of reffing training? I'm up for learning and have found myself in situations where I could have reffed and basically not done it because of feeling I don't know enough.
I like jono's comment above about constantly talking... That's basically the opposite of what I'd think of doing!

Worst excuse ever, up there with Chukkers "light touch" reffing.
I would make warnings but let like for like teams battle it out.
Todd's comment is nearly identical to my argument for light touch reffing. None of the players in that game thought it was dirty, so why should a ref have been more involved. And how does Pique then say this?
I agree with everything you have said Todd

Let's not discourage anyone from reffing.
Thanks to Pique and Jono, the LPC has just lost another person who has done quite a bit of reffing during this league (and the other two leagues).
-

He says it because he agrees with it.
Maybe your both saying the same thing? I dont know, as always i would much prefer having these conversations face to face so that people dont get the wrong end of the stick and get defensive.

Are you reffering to you? If so Im very sorry.

Yep. I have reffed many, many league games over the last three years. But if people want to call my reffing a "worst excuse" and "ignored/rubbish ref" then I am done.
Not that I recall anyone ever objecting to any specific incident in the dozens of league games I've reffed, but apparently now there are serious problems with my reffing philosophy, in the abstract, so fuck it.
And good luck finding more refs if people keep bitching they way they did when John H volunteered yesterday.

I said "I'd argue that..." just as you can argue whatever you like?
There is no standard, no referee guidebook, just online opinions... crane your neck in and keep fighting the good fight (I have respect for anyone who refs, end of)!

Your opinion being that my reffing is rubbish.
-
• #40
Can't we all just get along and agree that Max is the worst ref?
-
• #41
I think the idea of "light touch" reffing is flawed, yes. I don't think you're a rubbish/bad ref.
Just my 2 cents, not worth the toilet paper it's written on, etc.

That means they saw a dirty game and let it be that way which is wrong.Yeah, fair call, I guess it was a bit of a dick move from me to let the game flow, despite the infractions I saw (and did shout out warnings for, but didn't do anything else about), but then to comment on it afterwards.
I guess it's a case of put up or shut up.

Reffing is shit, peoples comments about reffing are unfailingly negative and I have massive respect for the people who carry on doing it even after someone bitches at them.
If the league were ever to garner a fee to enter I would suggest the money goes to the people reffing.

• #44
Chukker, i know you're not that sensitive.

Maybe.
But seriously, way more people need to step up to the reffing table and grab a fork.
Fuck all y'all who bitch and dont ref.
Also, refs most defintely need helpers/score keepers/time keepers so they can focus on the game.

In my opinion, it would be very useful for all the refs to have a meeting to discuss the rules, how to enforce them & general things like, as Pique mentioned above, having a word with both teams beforehand, not least to check bikes & mallets, but also to clarify what sort of game you expect to see.
It's not too late in the season to do it.

I would be up for this. I certainly feel I could learn a lot from some of you guys who have reffed a lot in the past. Maybe before the playoffs anyone who is interested in reffing can sit down and go through the rules together, and how they would handle certain situations. And if people are willing maybe ref a few practice games together, and see how we would handle different situations.

If anyone wants to step-up and have a referee discussion pre-playoffs then I'd be up for it.
We could chat about the rules, general tips, answer any questions, etc?
It might also be good to have a look over the new NAH rules, but it's probably not the time/place (we normally review rules in London before each league/tourney)?

I just want to say that reffing is a hard task once a tough game comes up.
Let's not discourage anyone from reffing.
I have a fair bit of experience but would definitely struggle sometimes to make a correct decision.
Though I would make warnings but let like for like teams battle it out.
I don't think anyone is up to a decent reffing standard and we have to do what we can and as best as possible.
We need people to want to come forward as refs and not shy away.
However, refs need to have balls too and not be frightened to make a call and deal with consequences.
I will always abide by any referee even if I think their decision is the wrong one.
I will also always play to the whistle and get on with the game at all times taking any advantage when need be.
We all know the basic rules. The game's getting tougher and we need to play safe but play hard.
That's how I see it.
