Ritchey Speedmax's are the worst cross tyres I've ever used. Rode 4 races with them, and punctured in 3 of them.

Thats poo. Most CX frames I've checked, have room for my 45mm nordic spikes.
I reckon my Crosslight CSix2 will fit 45mm tyres, I've got miles of clearance with my 35mm Racing Ralphs

I contacted Stans, re using the 29er rims but with tubes and they said "You can inflate to the max pressure on the tire with a tube. Using a tube at higher pressure on this rim can decrease the longevity of the rim.
The tire will not blow off. The lifespan of the rim will be shortened and you will have to replace it sooner then if it had been run tubeless. I do not have an exact life span for this rim."This is mainly going to be used for a commuto-x build.

No contest.
Why would you run your tyres at a higher pressure when those rims are reasonably wide?

no tubes rims are designed for tyres at 40psi max - but that is when running them set up tubeless

The rims are designed with 2.2" tyres in mind. Not 1.4" CX tyres.
James do you expect to be carrying much?
While I think the 29er xc rim route is the right one. I might go with a beefier rim if I expected to load the bike.
Otherwise they look nice.

I'm interested in this question also, my rear hub is shot to bits.

Sound like you need to lose weight fattie.

FWIW I have handbuilt CXP33s on SRAM X9 disc hubs. £300 a pair, but getting hold of X9 hubs is tricky. Went with X9 for the sealed bearings and 6 point mount, otherwise would have gone with XT / XTR. Next set will probably use Hope hubs.

Occasionally I would look to carry a weeks shopping from the supermarket, but for a short distance. The usual load is likely to be lunch, spare clothes, tools (fairly comprehensive selection) and spare parts. I may also consider some light touring.
How well would cx or road tyres fit to the 29er rims?

A 35mm tyre would fit a 24mm wide XC rim brilliantly I imagine.
Marathon racers, or supremes would be great.Sounds like the Hope Hoops will be fine.

I've been using a 25C gatorskin on a Mavic TN719- which is a 29er rim, works very well.

1+ 24mm is a perfectly decent width for as low as 25c.

The stans rims have a better bead lock too. So in theory should be better for:
A) low pressures.
B) allowing small tyres.Never tried them myself though.

Re Hope Hoops, which rim makes most sense - Crest 29er or Mavic 719 29er.

That's a CAAD9 cross from 2009 -10. Also called the CX9.
No tasty wishbone stays on the current CAADX and Supercross.

^^ I've seen quite a few of these on Ebay recently, including the versions with the Fatty Headshock fork.
Yep but won't take a 35mm...?
