  • THis really pisses me off. I have ridden the last two tweed runs and they were great days with great organization.

Last year I was a little miffed that what had started out as a nice forum ride was limited and lots of forum folk couldnt to the ride. BUT, Teddy and Jaquie put in a huge ammount of efort to make the ride happen that was the first un-escorted ride of that size in London. There had to be a limmit and that was that. That people outside the forum wanted to join in was a suprise (but a good one) and some people on here complained. I would say that most of those who rode the first forum tweed ride also made it onto the second one last year.

This girl is pissed off that she didnt get on the ride. SHe knows nothing of its oragins (originaly planned to be a few people in tweed riding to High tea in Highgate before a hundred people signed up and teddy turned it into an amazing large scale event within three or four months) and stands a chance of pissing off the awthoraties jepodizing the tweed run for next year.

Enjoy the ride people, I hope you all have a fantastic day. I will do a tweede runny (due to naming rights) down in Auckland on my own on the same day by donning the limited tweed I brought with me and riding to a tea shop for a cuppa.

Doffs hat to Teddy and Jaquie.

  • The Alternative Tweed run! Bah!

    How uncouth and ungentlemanly.

Good luck with Tweed Run III.

  • +1to pinks.

  • Last year I was upset I didn't get in, this year I made sure I got a ticket. Sorry but the world belongs to early birds and those who who are truly serious about grabbing opportunities.
There is clearly a lot more demand than offer but I appreciate the non-commercial and first come first served aspect of it. I believe it is the most fair way to deal with this.
Open rallies are also possible such as CM or the LondonSkate (which I used to marshal on), but I don't think this is the spirit of the tweed run.
I guess it also puts the pressure on those with tickets to invest in their appearance and put on a good show on the day.
So there's my little support paragraph for Jaqui and Teddy :)
    Cheers.

  • just got back to the forum and the book of face and I'm amazed by the brouhaha about this. Just shows the demand for a genteel ride in tweed.

I'm not the first and round of applause for General Lucifer for being on the money with praising the hardwork that Teddy and Jacqui put into making this event as special as it is, and that so much bitching and whining can be generated by those who didn't manage to get in. The Tweed Run is special and though surprised by how quickly the registered places went, I wasn't surprised that it would be over subscribed.

That being the case, its probably time for those who didn't make the cut to man/woman up and acknowledge the hard work and effort Teddy and Jacqui and start a petition to ensure there is more than one tweed run a year, with a larger participant pool, which would satisfy the masses who didn't make it this time round. Which is a better outcome than sending seething emails about how you were duped out of a place and how unfair it all is, as the registration opened five mins earlier than you were told. It opened five mins earlier for everyone, and if you weren't on the registration page before the actual start time, with the knowledge of how oversubscribed it was last time, then insert facepalm pic here...

I hold up my hand and say I managed to get a place, but I would not be pissing and moaning in this thread and other social networks about the tweed run if I hadn't.

I agree with the sentiment, applaud all the work that Teddy, Jaqui and any other organisers do & wouldn't dream of criticising them but I feel people still have a right to feel aggrieved about how it happened. I understand the reasoning behind opening 5 mins earlier but given that the registration was closed in 5 minutes and before the original, widely publicised, start time it is understandably frustrating.

The clamour for registration from the beady eyed and fast of finger though is beyond the organiser's control and not worth getting worked up about.

Anyway, I've put myself forward to help marshal and make all you lucky sod's days as enjoyable as possible ;)

  • wibble, I have no problem with people feeling aggrieved, but its the same every year, there's always going to be disappointment with the tweed run, with the amount of people who want to be part of it and the very limited number who are allowed by the authorities and teddy and jacqui's event insurance.

The first tweed run as you know had an extraordinary number of people on it, far exceeding the numbers envisaged by those who went out and bought some tweed at the last minute after remembering they were on the ride.

I don't believe the level of upset will be banished by whatever teddy or jacqui do, whether tickets are awarded via lottery, or there is a 5k limit (wishful thinking), or there are multiple rides per annum. There will always be some other reason to get overwrought because you are not a part of it.

I'm glad I'm on the list, but I would not be throwing my toys out of the pram if I was not. Would the upset and frustration be greater if the registration had opened at twelve like initially posted and the website had fallen over under the weight of people trying to register and then having to sit and wait for the site to pop back up. Imagine the outcry if you'd been denied entry by those means and the wailing that would have gone on.

Personally I'd be extremely interested to find out how many people tried to register, because the speed with which it filled up, leads me to surmise that it was in the thousands, possibly tens of thousands, though that could be overstating it somewhat, which is great credit to Jacqui and Teddy, and the popularity of the ride they have worked so hard to create and promote.

Let me make it clear not having a dig at you personally, but some of the witterings on the book of face and in this and other threads has just got my dander up. The only time there wasn't this aggrieved clamour was on the first one, when no one knew how many people were going to turn up anyway, and there was no registration, because it wasn't believed to be necessary, because hundreds of people wouldn't turn up to ride around london dressed in tweed, would they?

The Tweed Run is now a victim of its own success and I for one hope Teddy and Jacqui can make it still feel as special and unique as it grows.

If you do get the nod to be a marshal wibble, it'd be good to see you, its been too long.

    ....

    [didn't get in]

i sense a trend emerging, doctor

  • It's not that I didn't get in, it's that the registration was closed before I was told it would open.

That's not Teddy or Jaqui's fault. Just ridiculously high demand coupled with a sensible reason for opening early.

IMHO, if registration had opened at 12.00 & I'd tried to register at 12.05 when it had filled up I would not feel the same sense of frustration. I'd be disappointed at not getting in but not hard done by. It's not the same and 'there'll always be people disappointed at not getting in' doesn't address the feelings.

  • Another big thank you to jacqui and teddy for sterling work.

Please don't take any moaning to heart, please continue your amazing work.

  • velo libre, have you got nothing better to do than stirring the pot, go get some sleep, otherwise you'll be in no fit state for the ride east..

  • Dear All,
Later today I will be posting up regarding marshals and volunteers so check back if you are still keen to participate.

  • I got a ticket but my friend didn't.
So I will be dressed in tweed and friendless... SOB!
However, I imagine it will be a very inclusive ad convival atmosphere and I'm still very much looking forward.
Will take the camera along for some dashing mugshots, hopefully.

  • Don't think that organising a ride is easy. My last essex ride had nearly 50 people signed up , though I think 30 of us did it in the end.

I was a bit worried about taking that many people out to Essex, especially as I knew how busy the route would be on the way back. So to have 450 people in tweed riding around London safely takes some organising.

Well done the two of you.

BTW , another Joy of Essex ride is on the cards...

  • Why not marshal?

    Come on, mate. Get involved!

I was hoping to take it easy this year and have my ladyfriend come along on the her newly 'furbed mixte. May still marshall if it's a possibility.

  • I haven't read any of this since my post yesterday so can only guess what's been said. I didn't get in at 12.03 & am disappointed like everyone else, however, this isn't a forum only ride and rightly so. It's an amazing day out and I wish everyone who got on the list the very best of days.

I'm the only person to blame for not getting a place and I guess next time I'll be more vigilant and be refreshing the page from 1 hour before.

    That is all.

  • The odious person who has started the group is obviously mad - she is claiming the Tweed Run is homocentric

Sounds like the organiser is looking for a page on Encyclopedia Dramatica.

My fiancée (eep!) has become quite confused on account of actually having studied Latin, and wonders what's wrong with the Official Tweed Run being 'human-centred'.

  • Everyone who was not lucky in the great ticket rush of '11 can maybe organise some sort of Tweed Olympiad in Hackney for the BobbinQuinn nuptials maybe?

A lot of the tweed runners will be heading straight there afterward I would think- I will be.

The Chap Olympiad does include cycling events, as I recall...lfgss team for this year's event?

  • The Tweed Run is looking for volunteers and marshals:
The Tweed Run is a fun, social and brilliant day out, and it is everything it is because of the fantastic volunteers and marshals who dedicate their time and skills to create an amazing day for everyone. We’re looking for volunteers and marshals:

    What does Marshalling involve?

Marshals share a huge responsibility. Marshals interact with the riders and the public and are the face of the event, it’s an exciting role. They might have to change a puncture, talk to tourists, cab drivers, and other motorists. They will definitely have to cork traffic , keep calm and watch bikes, traffic.. the job is varied. They also ride the route with the entire ride ensuring the safety of each rider and onlooker.
It’s a big commitment. Expect to give up at least 3 evenings and 2 weekend days leading up to the event – about 20hrs in total. All marshals regardless of experience are required to attend multiple training sessions and practice runs.

    Who are we looking for..

Ideally if you want to Marshal, you’ll have previous experience either as a cycle instructor, a ride leader for your club, work as a cyclist, or previous experience from LCC or even past Tweed Runs. London cycle experience and geographic knowledge is essential and is tested. All marshals are vetted and or tested prior to acceptance.

    Volunteers:

There are about 30 non-cycling volunteer positions of varying levels of commitment both in the lead up and on the day of the event. These roles range from van driver to tea serving, sandwich making, reg pack stuffing, bunting hanging, setting up and tearing down at the sites. These volunteers do not ride the ride, and we know that is a BIG ask, however you’ll get to go to the after party and you’ll be** guaranteed admission to the next event this fall - (skipping the tombola lottery draw)**

If you want to be considered as a marshal or for a volunteer, please email us at:

    volunteers@tweedrun.com
    many thanks
