I tried a few pairs of the current Uniqlo last week. They look okay ish but definitley not up there in terms of quality (what do you expect for £34?). They feel pretty light and very stretchy and you can see that in the way they hang.
I couldn't get on with the sizing either. I'm usually a 34" and the slim/skinny fit 34" were spot on round the waist but skin-tight like Rod Stewart's sprayed on jeggings on my fat old cyclist thighs. The 36"were ok on the legs but like like giant clown pants round the waist.
The regular/stright fits looked like Asda own-brand dad jeans.
Proper denim doesn't have lycra in it.

Well natch. Although I'm not a selvedge snob. I have 8 or 10 pairs of selvedge that I wear regularly but I also have plenty of non selvedge and stretchy jeans. Great for summer and for riding. I almost never ride in "proper" denim.

I'll take them?

Anybody here know some good sources or articles about the specifics of denim production?
I'm going to design a denim mill as my exam for master of architecture so I need to know a lot about the physical requirements to run such a production. I'm focusing on small scale high end production of the raw/selvedge/authentic/heritage kind. And I need all the input I can gather.
At the moment I know enough about denim and jeans to be fascinated, but not much more than that.
Cheers

Just got a pair of Gustin Cone Mills Summer - weargustin.com/store/1730
They're a 32 Skinny and not even close to fitting me. I have APC petit standards & petit new standards in a 32 so I'm guessing these would suit someone that usually wears a 30. I paid $103 & £18.63 customs. Anyone want them for £70 without the wait? They're in Bethnal Green.
So that was 2 months ago and these aren't getting worn. £40 anyone?

I bought a pair of black selvedge from RL Denim & Supply on sale. Pleased with quality and even at full price I'd say they're good value for money.

Picked up a pair of Tellason Gustave recently. Really like them although wasn't aware quite how much indigo dye I'd be leaving on anything I've been near.

I went to visit Candiani Denim outside of Milan yesterday and today. I took a shitload of photos of everything except their 40some vintage shuttle looms because they had some secrets there. I will put them up tomorrow if anyone's interested.(?) I's a cool place that does everything from raw cotton to finished fabric.
