Yes. Ish.
It should be taken into account certainly in terms of allowing for the extra mileage with regards to the recovery necessary (depending on how hard you ride it and what your proper training consists of).
Can be used for base training or active recovery, not safe enough for intervals really in London. What's Rob's manual say, I wonder.. :) -

I use mine as base training on the way in (about 20 miles each way) then on the way home I do a few sprint intervals as the roads tend to be relatively quiet. Also, finding a few random hills along the route home is handy (some short sharp ones around Holland Park).
FFS hippy stop editing your post, it's bloody distracting!

How would riding you bike not count?
-
• #5
It can 'not count' by hindering your training goals. Kind of the opposite of 'counting'.. gnitnuoc.
-
• #6
if you sweat, considerably, yes.
why would you be counting anything as something?

Yes. Right. So commuting on your bike - getting some TITS in - actually harms your training does it? Explain exactly how that works then would you? And your better suggestion would be what exactly - bus, car, taxi, what?

It's quite common actually. Ask any coach. Riders doing intervals on a Monday and then getting caught up in the commuter olympics the day after, hampering their recovery or a big weekend followed by a week of commuting too hard so again their recovery is hampered. Anyway, I thought you had me on ignore? http://www.lfgss.com/thread53035-6.html#post1711061 Knowledge fail. Ignore fail.

Trash miles... RPM will be along to confirm this shortly... Unless he's already getting his sprinter's kip...
-
• #12
junk miles is the term i have heard for it
heart rate keeps lowering so wont help with fat loss etc
-
• #13
Maillot jaune... Finally...
-
• #14
Yes, far better to sit on your arse.
-
• #15
but time could be better spent doing dedicated training
-
• #16
While you're commuting? How would you do that, James?
-
• #17
Pelvic floor exercises on the bus?
-
• #18
surely commuting in Rapha is epic training?
-
• #19
Only if you ride over Col du Pentonville..
-
• #20
how you ride in training will develop that type of riding
so short 50 yard sprints between traffic lights will make you good at short 50 yard sprints, but given an urban environment its a fairly foolish thing to do
if you are doing distance training where maintaining a controlled heart rate and cadence is what is required then the stop start of commuting will not be helping you
if looking to lose weight you need to go into fat burning energy pathway, which is generally triggered by constant moderately raised heart rate activity
so, does the variable load involved in commuting contribute to my training goals - probably not at all
the suggestion is to use commuting as recovery ride time, go slowly, use it as part of a structured training program

Commuting constitutes 100% of my training.
-
• #22
if training to commute then thats perfect!
-
• #23
These moderate paced rides that are “kinda hard” are the most common form of junk miles
Kinda hard. All seven miles of it.
-
• #24
And I commute to the pub, not work.

Only if you ride over Col du Pentonville..
Fuckin own that climb...thinking bout getting the Rapha spesh editiion merino jersey
Well, does it?
My commute is 11 miles each way, 15 if I take the scenic route. Is this any kind of aid to fitness? It's not exactly mindblowing. There's a bit of a hill, but nothing 'epic'. And no, before you suggest it - I'm not going to bloody sprint from lights etc etc - too busy trying to stay alive. Is this just general riding good for you? Is that a stupid question?
