Really sorry to hear this. I remember seeing this thread just after the accident and riding home a different route last night I saw the bike in place.
A lovely and personal gesture.

My thoughts go out to Dan's family and friends.

Good to see massive boards with the phone number, not quite clear enough about the fact they need witnesses though.
I too pass by the bike regularly and always stop to reflect and read/think about the people that loved him. Very sad. RIP -

I'd just like to add my condolences for those who knew Dan.

Thanks to all Dan's friends for offering to support the LCC's No More Lethal Lorries campaign. We have got this issue on the top of the TfL safety agenda.
We want to see much better training for lorry drivers. Now we think that the council in Hackney, where Dan was killed, will take up the type of cycle training for their drivers that is given to drivers in Lambeth and Hammersmith & Fulham.
We are planning a big push to get more signatures on our petition for all councils to do the same: http://www.lfgss.com/thread54692.html

Sorry it's late, just wanted to add my condolences to Dan's family and friends.
On a happier note that's amazing that you've sorted out two such great tributes for him.
I imagine a few people might want to do a group ride up to Oto before the gig? Could be cool. -

Just got this from the LCC
**Dear fellow cyclist, **
London cyclist Daniel Barnes is riding the Etape du Tour on 11 July in memory of his close friend Dan Cox, killed by a left-turning lorry at Dalston Junction in February 2011.
Dan will be raising money for LCC’s No More Lethal Lorries Campaign and the Intensive Care unit of the Royal London hospital.
LCC is flattered and delighted that half of all the money Daniel raises will be supporting our ongoing HGV appeal, and is asking LCC members to give generously via his webpage to help him reach his £3,000 target.
The No More Lethal Lorries campaign is raising the profile of HGV danger across London. LCC’s latest concern is around the Government’s proposal to allow vehicles with longer trailers on London’s streets.
LCC is asking for no more longer lorries in London. The Department for Transport’s consultation failed to fully assess the impact of these extra long lorries, and the increased risk to cyclists.
Please give generously on Dan’s webpage and help boost LCC’s campaign capabilities as well as supporting the Royal London Hospital. You can also pop down to his fundraising event this Saturday night at ‘Look Mum No Hands’ -

If anyone is interested there is an exhibition on in Cambridge at the moment that Dan Cox was curating with his friend, an Artist called Andy Holden.
There is a review in the Guardian here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2011/jun/30/andy-holden-artist-of-week

Did a search and not sure if this has been posted elsewhere (sorry if it has) - walked past this ghost bike about a week ago and it's been beautifully decorated with christmassy things.
I guess some of you will already know this but there is also a commemorative plaque now fixed to the bike/ rack with a bit of info on Dan and the sort of person he was - please stop and read it if you go past, it's really touching.
I never knew Dan but he sounds like a great guy, in fact I was surprised how moving it was reading the plaque by the roadside.
As a newcomer to cycling in London I'm really impressed by the cycling community and the fact that ghost bikes are tended to and kept on as iconic memorials, I really hope this bike can be preserved as long as possible.
Please keep an eye out for any jobsworths from the council tinkering with it (I live locally and I certainly will), it's a bit more of a 'proper' memorial now with the plaque so hopefully they'll leave it be.

We decorated it for xmas a few weeks ago. the plaques been on there since we built the bike but it was a bit hidden before on the front wheel.
The council have been really supportive with it, letting us know when they had to move it temporarily for road works so hopefully they will let us know again if anything else is happening with the area.

Oh sorry, I hadn't spotted it before and I thought it might be a new addition. It looks fantastic anyway, and I'm really glad the council have been supportive.

Saw the new decorations as I rode by the other day. Always tip my cap as I pass a ghost bike (little habit) and it's lovely to see one looking so loved and maintained (something really odd about old tired flowers which have been left for ages). Love to all Dan's kin and friends this Christmas x.

Thanks for posting.

the article is a little confusing. First it mentions that the driver was charged with death by careless driving, but later says death by dangerous driving. There's quite a difference.
This possibly isnt the place, so apologies, but I go past that junction almost every day and there seems to be a total lack of signs appealing for witnesses. Surely that needs rectifying.
Like many I never knew Dan, though having seen his bike at the scene I had certainly seen him around. I'd echo what others have said about the smiles in those pics. The ghost bike seems to be having more crazy shit added whenever I have passed and it's a beautiful tribute.
