What sort of pace/speed you hoping for on this ride John?
-
• #78
Definitely slower than the pace/speed of the DDE that's for sure!
-
• #79
Still in. I wasn't going to turn up on my geared mtb after all.

This is a casual, shorts and t-shirts ride(that waits for everybody) to the coast with fish & chips and beer waiting.
This is not a race, or a training session, or to be taken at all seriously, you do not need any special equipment or clothing.

Would love to come on this, trying to find out if I can get that day off.
In the spirit of co-operation I will do this on the polobike, but I can't see why geared riders should be excluded or frowned upon, just like I don't feel it fair if you do choose to go geared to then moan about the slow pace of the ride.
Honestly I don't feel it fair that on any casual ride such as this, that should be the case anyway.
What was nice about Herne Bay was towards the end of the ride groups emerged and rode the last 20/30k on their own at their own pace, whether a roadie 25mph peloton or a slow meandering cruise with conversation.
I think there's room for this and all types of bicycle and rider on a casual ride, surely? If you feel frustrated maybe you're missing the point of these rides.

Will be changing my 17t to an 18t to compensate for the slower paces.
I know I felt frustrated cycling at a slower RPM, so it make sense to have a spinnier ratios and still ride at a good pace.

Simple, I think--it's John's ride, he tells you how it's done. I think a ride leader who makes the effort to organise enjoys that privilege. For this forum, it's hardly such a far-fetched rule to make. :)
I've done every LFGSS ride outside London that I've done geared, although of course plenty inside London fixed, and I need to equip my fixed bike for longer rides, including getting removable bottle cages, which I've been meaning to do for ages.
I'd love to go to Clacton but I'm still not sure I can make this one.

Would be grateful of your company Oliver.

This ride works thus:
1st 100 KMs are with the group at a social pace.
The last 20KMs you will do at your own pace(the B1027 is straight to the sea).
We meet up again at the pier and wait for everybody to get in.

I seem to remember being one of the ones near the back for that end stretch to Herne Bay and I had gears.
Not everyone with gears is a speed demon; just like not everyone riding brakeless is a danger to those around them; just like not every driver is a twat. But there are those that are. Not to generalize or anything, ;-) but stereotyping is shite.

not all stereotypes are shite, that'd be a stereotype.

i would attend this, but i don't own a fixed gear or single speed bike.
what if i just tape up the levers? or daub them with marmite?
-

I wonder how fox would feel about this.
Hmm! Well, I agree with John basically. I've seen some responsible geared riding recently to be fair, but I've also seen some annoying dick riding off the front.
Oh you were asking about photoshopping? Photoshopping what? Er. Ok.
I think there's a law against that...

And seriously, if you're on London Fixed-gear and Single-Speed...
Bugger, this is the Saturday my parents are coming down to London :(

I've never ridden fixed, and seems pointless stripping back to ss.
The forum is a laugh.
Do you think the people who put their name originally on the old list knew of the change? after all they're likely to put it down and forget about it till the day come.
especially when I know some of them whose only bike is a geared one.
Skully, you were missed on the Essex ride, the saddlebag worked beautifully, packed too much stuff though!
