firstly, it wasn't that some of those comments could 'appear' racist in any way, it was that they were plain racist. never acceptable to use the word pikey, even if you're not talking about gypsies. the word has strongly racist connotations and you could have easily just said 'thieving twat'. the comment about 'white people steal too' was also racist. what exactly did you mean by that? i didn't see anyone make any reference to it just being non white people who steal, so why did you feel the need to clarify? perhaps it is just the way your posts came across and perhaps you are a rwally nice person, but i took objection and felt it necessary to voice my objection. i also feel it was wrong to give the thief £60 but hey, you're intentions may well have been good.
anyway, peace and love and all that.stepsawayfromthethread

ok. so for once and all and i really hope i wont have to repeat this ever again - being called racist/calling someone a racist is pretty harsh thing to say the least. For the future reference and so no one is mistaken that im some racist (possibly thievery supporting) little idiot:
i did mention that it was my mistake to use a word pikey. about two posts after the original.
i thought that i was being funny and ironic when i said that white people steal too (i mean obviously) that being in capitals was meant to enhance the irony. ok, maybe not very tasteful joke it seems. sorry, i'll stop trying being funny.
im a mixed race so technically, can hardly be a racist myself. I actually even look like a frikking romanian gypsy! well, kinda.

I think it's called selective transgression.

Nikola, if my bike was stolen i would hope that someone like you would find my bike and make an active effort
to find the owner, rather than it be sold to someone who has no intention of returning it to the original owner.
I think what you have done is a great thing and im sure the owner will be delighted to get their bike back, even
if they have to pay £60. at the end of it what is £60? nothing really if you get your bike back!
You are a good person with good karma -

Best thread ever to demonstrate the truly confused nature of the forum and how it is impossible to please everyone here.
I am not utterly beffudled.
Is buying stolen property but with good intentions a good or bad thing?
Is using a racist term incorrectly a good or bad thing?
Perhaps we could have a moral conundrum thread each week, and the armchair philosphers here could have a debate.

even
if they have to pay £60. at the end of it what is £60? nothing really if you get your bike back!thats what i thought right? if you splashed 400 quid on bike plus accessories then 60 quid is not bad to get it back. i do hope that the person wont find it too expensive, there's nothing i can do about it.
also, it made some people speculate i might be a very cunning thief (haha) frankly, that's just too clever trying to sell stolen bike on anti-thievery forum and im not so clever. -

But a Pikey is not a racial group. It's an (arguably) poor short hand for a thief. I thought the "[strike]Honke[/strike] white folk steal too" kinda funny in that way, that if someone like Balki had posted it the reps would have flowed. There is far worse posted here that is not taken to task and given this was to help a potential forumite some of it seems a little sensitive

Contending that mixed-race people can't be racist is plain utter nonsense. Thus asserting it as a logical rebuttal of any racism on your part is also utter nonsense. I'm not saying you are racist.
If you are going to come to a bike forum, admit that you paid a thief £60 for a bike you knew to be stolen, didn't involve the police, then throw in references to "pikeys" and white people stealing, for who knows what reason, you can hardly be surprised when some people aren't falling in love with you for it, however genuine your desire to give it to the owner may be.

Here list of [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ethnic_slurs"]ethnic slurs[/ame] to cross check next time you wanna make a comment on lfgss, containing also the forementioned derogatory word "gypsy", which was used by pretty much every anti-racist activist on this thread (all two of them)
let's gloss over it now, but next time the punishment will be FIERCE.

WTF?!?!?
I can't believe you paid someone for a stolen bike, in an attempt to return a bike to its rightful owner, because if you hadn't bought it, someone else would have 5mins later!
Why didn't you just d-lock their face in, lock them to a bike rack and hand them over to the police? Massive fail imo.
You're clearly no better than a bike thief yourself.
if this is ironic, LOL.
yeah i'm about 5ft3 not sure if i was any good in face to face kombat. will try next time tho, my kryptonite's itching for it.
ummm... she got it.
@Hugo: Are we to believe you'd be happy for your girlfriend or sister - all 5'4" of her- to attempt taking a D-lock to some randon East end criminal? Really?....
Yes, yes that's exactly what I'd expect someone to do. Personally I find it offensive that you clearly think that people under 5'5" are incapable of standing up to criminals. I am also offended by the sexist undercurrent of your post.
/Troll
In all seriousness I echo pretty much every sane persons sentiment that this was positive action.

Glad Will said the grown up thing cos I was gonna say some BS about trying to get a yentz.
What a fucking great welcome for a newcomer that tries to help one of us in the best way she knows. I'm yet to hear from those against the OP's action what they'd say if it was their stolen bike that was returned.
