  • Look like normal rotors to me and the pads installed are organic ones anyway.

  • The pads now look like this after a couple of minutes...

    They were both sanded down clean so they looked like the edges all over. Rotors too. Isopropyl wiped.

  • Tried fire, sanding, scourer, detergent, isopropyl, etc. Cleaned the caliper internals with wet wipes and iso. Basically, I can't make these fucking things any cleaner or rougher or newer or whatever.

  • I'm done with these fucking things. Anyone got a new 6-bolt 160mm rotor they want to sell?

  • Nevermind. I found one. I'm gonna throw a new rotor on and new pads and if it still makes noise then I'm going to superglue every moving part in the caliper in place and brake by crashing like normal.

  • Its oil in the cut outs which yeah unless you immerse it then give it a good scrub e will stay there.

    Could be leaking seals too.

  • Iso bath or maybe a degreaser bath? Or degreaser then iso? Or degreaser then meths then iso...

    I've found another rotor so might just try that with new pads.

  • True but my road bike brakes were working fine hurtling down Italian mountains. These things can't even slow from walking speed without screaming.

  • Whichever, give it a good scrub with a brush and rinse it clean.

  • I've been testing Galfer pads and rotors recently and having some great results. Quiet and powerful even on semi hydraulic Juin techs.

  • Looking for some brakes for the bike.
    I need something that's flat mount for flat bars.
    Choices seem to be:

    • Shimano SLX
    • Hope Tech 3 X2
    • Magura MT4
      Shimano are cheapest but no stock anywhere. Hope aren't cheap but past experience of their kit has been good. Magura, I know nothing about.
      Am I missing anything or should I just splash the cash on the Hopes?
  • Happy to build your own SLX? You could get the levers, hose and calipers separately!

  • How much more are hope? I like that hope are full serviceable and rebuildable. If you want some that will last forever, go hope. If you want good brakes that work but won't last forever go Shimano.

  • Hope were about £100 dearer.

    I bit the bullet and ordered some Hopes. As you say, at least if I suffer with leaking callipers like Shimano seem to then I can rebuild them.

  • They were recommended to me by a mechanic in Spain. I think at the time they only did MTB ones but I think more recently they've got road options.

  • I always run 6 bolt anyway as centrelock always leaves the bike feeling there is headset play. Definitely rate the galfers, have made a huge difference to my braking power although I've yet to do a wet ride.

  • How do 6 bolt make a difference? Surely they are both securely clamped to the hub?

  • I think there's more play in the brake pads/caliper than you'd ever find in the centrelock splines. It's easy to tell that it's not headset anyway.

  • Slide a centrelock rotor onto a hub spline and notice how much rotational movement there is. When you consider you have 2 companies making 2 different parts (one for rotor, one for hub) it doesn't take much of a machine tolerance difference to create some space to allow movement. Yes I agree that pads can move in some calipers .

  • Put a 6 bolt rotor on a hub with the bolts in only a few turns of the threads and see how much rotational movement there is.
    Hint: it's probably more than centerlock splines. The point is that they're both held firmly against the hub by the lateral clamping of a lockring (or 6)

  • You also only ever brake in one direction, so once the disc sits against the splines, they never move back unless you pull on the bike while braking.
    I've actually noticed that the cheap shimano hubs have the best fit with centrelock rotors. I think because they don't post-machine the hubs after painting.

  • I just had a go on some Trickstuff Piccola Carbon C22s. They are really really good. I don't know if they're 800EUR good, but they have such good modulation. Pad clearance is quite tight and the lightweight rotors are a bit gobbly though.

  • There's small spacers in some centerlock lockrings. I normally have a few of these for spacing discs, can be used for wobbly rotors too.

  • I picked up a deore front disk brake to use on a midnight special fork not thinking that mtb & road flat-mount callipers might be different. Google suggests I'm wrong & I can't seem to find a suitable adapter.

    Can I buy a road disk calliper & use the deore lever or do I need to buy a whole new brake?
