Anyone know anything about disc brakes?

  • Does anyone have a spare external centerlock lock ring? Just realised I'll need one for my new wheels (silly 15mm front axle).

  • I've got a handful of them but am in Aberdeen,

Shoot me a PM if you'd like me to stick one in the post for you.

  • Post mount calliper on I.S fork for 160mm rotor. 0mm adapter is the right one?

  • Thanks for the offer @motoko, my wheel builder was a gent and popped one on for me so no need anymore.

  • Anyone got any opinions on non-Shimano Center Lock rotors (stuff like KCNC and the like)?

The cheap Shimano rotors seem to be like hen's teeth at the moment so contemplating alternatives to £50 Shimano rotors. It's for the gravel bike so I'm expecting them to be relatively abused.

  • Another option might be

so I could use my existing 6-bolt rotors until the price of CL rotors drops (LOL)

  • This is what I do on my commuter with alfine hub.

Got a ton of these adaptors if you need.

  • Thanks, I'll let you know. I don't have the wheel yet and might still end up buying posh rotors for the Mason and then sticking the old ones on the Kinesis.

  • Any of the budget pads that fit Force AXS hydro any good?

Replaced the organic set they came with with another set of organic pads and they’re on the way out after one particularly grimey ride. Will move to sintered but not that keen on paying 50p a km if that’s how quickly winter riding burns them

  • If it's for off-road riding I'd buy cheap pads in bulk, but the SRAM pads were better (non AXS)

  • Don’t know if Uber Bike do SRAM compatible pads, but I’m a very happy user of their sintered pads.

  • Those little shifter bleed screws with a 3 mm allen ! Jesus 5 quid for one replacement ! Shimano are taking the pee.

  • Thanks @Netakure @andyp

Will go budget for the winter and then possibly nice pads and new rotors when we make it through to spring

  • Sintered last way longer in winter than resin.

  • I get them from one of the German sellers or SJS and I usually buy 3-4 at a time. Helps given the bloody things are made of very soft cheese.

  • Got some Klampers and not used cable discs before - bit if a pain the arse to set up and not bedded them as waiting for a seatpost shim to turn up so I can ride the bike but...

The manual says adjust until 1” of throw at the lever, I prefer a bit less and would like it at 1.5cm but this is proving difficult. anyone know how I might be able to achieve this without having to true the rotor to perfection?

Or do I need to bed them first then make some more adjustments?

  • If you want less travel you'll have the pads closer to the disc. I'd rather have travel than rubbing discs.

  • Just thought I'd mention to anyone who'll listen that the Hope RX4 I've just put on the front of my CAAD is insane.
It's right on the limit of sideways adjustment to not rub on the rotor so took some setting up and the hose exit angle is a little extreme but in terms of performance, I can lift the rear wheel off the ground whilst seated. It's not all or nothing though, modulation is great.
Better than the Sram force on my gravel bike and better than the Sram level TL on the MTB

  • nice, whats it paired with shimano or sram? how was bleeding?

  • Shimano R8070. My first time bleeding anything but the process was very simple and straight forward. Much nicer than the recommended shimano method involving a plastic bag to attach to a hose at the caliper to collect fluid!
It was just funnel in the top, syringe at the caliper, push fluid up the hose from the caliper end until the bubbles stop then hold in the lever and create a vacuum with the syringe to suck out the bubbles from the bottom end. Worked a treat and I copied the method over to the ultegra caliper at the back and it worked fine for that too but the lack of a thread in bleed port made it a bit messier.

  • excellent, is the syringe proprietary ? i.e. did you have to buy any Hope bleeding thing?

  • It came with anything you'd need for the caliper end. "bleed blocks" AKA dummy pads, syringe and short hose. As well as bolts and 2 sets of pads.
Unsure whether that's usually the case, this came direct from Hope
Then I went with the Epic kit for Shimano for the fluid, funnel and syringe for the rear

  • Lucky you no bleed kit but I did get a umbrella ! Rather have the syringe and connector .

  • Excellent.

Last question; are rim brakes dead?
