I've got issues with my hope minis, would I be able to run SLX with the same rotors? For 180mm rotors would I need a bracket/adapter or anything to mount the calipers?
Depends what mounts your frame and forks have.
SLX calipers will be post mount so if you're not using that, you'll need adapters.
If you're gonna need adapters anyway then you can go with pretty much whatever size rotor you wants, just buy the correct adapter.

Is there much difference in terms of stopping power between bb7 road and trp hyrd?
I like my bb7 in wet. I got a bday coming up soon and I thought i get myself a nice present. -

With pretty much all road disc brakes the limiting factor is the grip between tyre and road, not the mechanical advantage of the brake.
You might get better modulation though.

I might have found a different frame I like so v brakes but thanks for the info.

SLX are worth it for the reach adjustment too, particularly if you have large hands. I bought XT on special recently, can't notice any difference in performance between them and SLX.

They all perform pretty much the same, deore have reach adjust but it's an Allen key, xt have bite point adjust but it's not really meant to work. They get a bit lighter and shinier as you pay more and I think the deore miss out on ceramic pistons, otherwise, same design.

Cheers mate.
Does anyone got the idiots guide to centring the bb7 brake on the fork? -
• #684
yup
my crib sheetloosen mounting bolts
back both pads out fully
tighten inner pad against disc so it doesn't move
back out 10 clicks
tighten outer pad against disc so it doesn't move
tighten mounting bolts -

Thinking about slapping the BB7 I have sitting doing nothing onto the back of my mtb and using the current rear caliper to replace the leaky one on the front (and get a free jump to 180mm rotor too).
I've used bmx linear cable with the BB7 when I've had it on the front of bikes before but I don't think a bmx cable will reach to the back of the bike so looking for a recommendation of a compressionless cable available in long lengths?

Goodridge stuff seems like better price. Cheers.

Most stuff can be bought by the metre unless it's a pre packaged set.

Was having fun with some hydraulic disc bikes at spin london so back on the idea of discs and have my head around the calipers for them most part but now looking more at rotors. I'm going shimano centerlock as it just seems less annoying to fit. Do I need to do anything special when selecting rotors or is it just "ooo it comes in bigger, click click click" and get the biggest I can?

The adapters would change too. 160 is sufficient for commuting, 180 at a push.
-
• #691
I'm 90kg and Shimano SLX with a 160mm rotor is more than powerful enough for one-fingered braking (front brake only). Have recently down-sized from 180mm.

I'm going shimano centerlock...
Are your hubs centrelock compatible? I've experienced centrelock being the source of horrendous brake noise (non shimano hubs, shimano rotors).
Bigger rotors might be more powerful but they are also more prone to warping/buckling.

One other thing to note, is that by going down a rotor size the rotor rubbing on the pads when out of the saddle went away.

anybody selling any spyres or hy/rd calipers?
-
• #695
Yeah shimano wheels/hubs. Just ordered some forks, brakes, gears, things. Once those come I'll pop down to the local shops and get random adapters and things I missed.

SLX is filthy cheap at the moment. Upgrade all ye hydro fanatics.

• #697
I've got a brand new pair of SLX brakes with white hose for sale. Make me an offer!
-
• #698
White hose? $5.

Where's best?

It's the adapters, they really fuck you on the adapters.
The avids work OK but are worse to bleed and those ones feel really cheap. Also the shimano ones all work really, really well and are well worth more money than they cost.
