  • if i'm using two wheelsets on the same bike, is it best for the two discs to be same brand? they'll both be 160mm but i was thinking i could use a lighter set on my race wheels...

  • Do the wheelsets have the same hubs?

  • Same discs and same hubs might rub on any given caliper setup. Impossible to know unless you try

  • im doing it now -i.e. 2 different brands ..... errr seems ok....so far.

  • one is hope pro2 and the other is hope RS4

  • I used to switch between novatec and hope pro 2. One set with cheapo avid rotors, the other with ice-techs. Worked without any issues.
Give it a go, worst that can happen you'll have to adjust your calipers.

  • great- thanks!

Are hope floating rotors still a decent go to lightweight rotor?

  • Never seen this before. Why would the piston crack?
Warranty replacement on its way from wiggle.

  • Enough force was applied, in a direction suitable, to crack it :)

  • That's the most accurate explanation I've ever read.

  • Accurate yet useless. I aim to please :)

Some people have cracked these by running mismatched rotors / adapters, so the piston tilts in the bore, then cracks.

You can crack them by getting hamfisted with a metal tool, should you wish to reset the pistons before new pad time.

  • No adapter, it sits directly on the fork. Using the rotor that came with the groupset. I didn't touch these brakes much since I got them. They came bled and set.
I discovered the crack while cleaning the bike. The rotor was covered in oil. Further inspection revealed that the piston is stuck and not retracting. Instead of pushing it in I took the caliper apart and pulled it out. I hoped that it's just dirty.
At least wiggle are not being difficult with the replacement. They must have seen it before.

  • Duff from the factory then.

  • A Deore brake wouldn’t have the same type of piston would it? I imagine it’d be something cheaper, heavier and thus less likely to crack?

I still have a leaky Deore brake kicking about somewhere that I haven’t done anything with.

I fact, I better dig it out, it’s probably dumped oil all over the spare room carpet :S

  • The only immediate differences between my m6000 and m8000 are hose quality and routing. The deore caliper looks exactly like the older rs785 which is the no groupset specific brake that came with ultegra 6800 groupset.
The older deore I know nothing about.

  • Lucky me!

  • Deore will have a phenolic piston, that XT has a ceramic piston (hence the brittle fracture).
I had a Deore (M615?) caliper start leaking onto the rotor for no known reason. Seemed easier to buy a whole new set...

  • Seemed easier to buy a whole new set...

    That was my thought.

I’d meant to take it back to Evans and see if they’d do anything as it was only barely out of warranty but I forgot to.

  • Disc brake woes. Flying out in a week to your Italy and problems don't go away.

Touring biek, is to post mount adapters. Campagnolo Veloce 10sp brifters, avid bb5s, standard pads.
Shimano slx center lock front new, Shimano 6 bolt rear, both 160mm.
    Jagwire keb-sl outers.

    Braking is shit at best.
Is this because bb5s are shit anyway?
Any possibilities with pads to improve braking?
Will bb7s offer a substantial upgrade?

Tried setting them up with the creditcard method, which kinda worked.

Will going for a 180mm front help any way? Bieks gonna be 115 kg with me and load..

    Any other suggestions?
Don't mention hydro (have a pair of hylex and bar end shifters as backup, but this should work right? Also the hylex need a bleed and have never done that)

  • My bb7s would happily throw me over the bars in a very similar set up to yours. I had 6800 levers tho.
This kinda sounds like you're running the mtb version. They would behave that way due to different cable pull ratio.

  • Credit card is way too big for a mechanical disc. Eapecially for the stationary ‘piston’. I’m always had to set them up basically touching the inside pad, otherwise you get a whole lot of rotor bending.

Don’t j-tek or someone make a campag adapter for mechanical discs?

  • avid bb5s

To clarify, are we talking BB5 Road or BB5 MTB?

  • Personally will stay away from both of them... ;)

  • As with @pit I have had bb7s on a few bikes and they’d chuck all 200lb of me over the bars. Have had mtb calipers with flat bar levers and road caliper with drop lever and both work really well. No credit card needed for set up (sometimes t25 torx key help for moving inner pad adjuster).

  • Getting Avids to work with Campagnolo leavers is a pita iirc.
