  • Wherever you buy your bike should have approximately 1000 of these lying around, they should come with all calipers, brake sets, and most complete bikes.

    Her approach to maintenance was hopeful at best - hose wash at the venue then dump the bike in 'shed' until next week.

    I thought the calipers would die, but they are still soldiering on :)

  • I had the same, its the fact that the pads have a small amount of movement and their 'relaxed position' is different from their engaged position, which isn't the same on the rear caliper. The sound seems to get quieter over time, and is reduced with other pads. I've found shimano pads and bbb pads to be quieter. Nothing to worry about though, just get used to it!

  • The only way I could remedy it is by changing both the stock pads and rotor. Great calipers though.

  • Could be the bearings as Spyre uses the same BB and ramp mechanism as the BB7 to move the pads. Do you pretension the arm prior to securing the cable (i.e. the arm sits naturally at 5 on the clock dial and you move it to 4 and then tighten the bolt) ?

    Hard to explain this unless you've dismantled a BB7 or Sypre but here goes: The above will cause the BB to be already on the ramp prior to the brakes being engaged and when you do brake, the BB will be sitting at the highest point of the ramp hence the noticeable movement.

    I've seen plenty who tension the arm to move the pads closer to the rotor which leads to the noticeable movement/sound. The correct setup is to leave it at 5 and then dial in the pads to get it closer to the rotor.

    Or your pads might be misaligned and one of the legs of the spring is in contact with the rotor.

  • What's the cross compatability of olives and barbs like across brands? I've a pair of TRP Hylex to fit in the near future and it'd be good if Shimano bits were compatible.

    Bizarrely Shimano olives seem to be a very tight fit, and the barbs push in a little too easily on the TRP hoses. I've got it together, just about, whether it's sealed I'm not sure.

  • so BH-59 barb had to be hammered in but BH-90 went in just with a thumb push .. brakes installed and bled and working fine .. will I die?

  • The ID of BH-59/63 and BH-90 aren't the same.

    The hose needs to be crushed between the barb and olive. If the barb is too small, fluid might pass between the hose and barb and the olive might not hold the hose securely enough for it not to eventually slip out.

  • Nah, dunno. I've only ever had a very snug barb and no leaky brakes. Best of luck :)

  • hmm I thought the same but just went on a 5 mile test ride and it seems fine so far, I'll order the right ones and install next week.

  • When I did a BH-90 (using the barb and olive that came included) recently, I had to tap the barb in with a hammer, holding the hose between the yellow plastic blocks in a mini-vise. Was so snug, had to re-clamp the hose a few times.

    Screwing the hose-bolt into the lever took so much torque I was almost certain I'd buggered the threads, but unscrewing it was fine and screwing back in again was easy until I hit the olive. The hose-bolt's threads didn't go all the way into the lever body, but it seems fine.

  • They should be a pain in the arse, not just the thumb to push in.
