What the fuck is a maxle?
I'm so out of touch with MTB technology.

I also need 12mm thru axles - let me know what's good!

In the spirit of recommending the thing that I have, I'm going to say DT Swiss RWS. They're light, simple to use and don't vibrate loose.

He'll probably say they're awful now..

He's probably machining his own.

What the fuck is a maxle?
15mm standard front thruaxle for trail bikes. There's 20mm for burlier applications, too.
Now there's this Boost shit, as well. Which I believe is a wider Maxle.
The beauty of standards etc.
FWIW There's little point in thru axles for hardtails / cross bike frames. Forks yes, frames, not so much.

You need this one:
and a drill with the right bit and the torque clutch set up to 10nm:
and a helper with a suit like this:
then you are set up for fast wheel changes...:)

Thanks.
Trouble is it looks like they don't do a 12x100 front one.

12x100 is a 'new' road standard I think .. my new frame is 12x100 front but it comes with the axle, I think I found one or two 12x100 axles here: https://r2-bike.com/

Can only really think of the Rockshox one for 12x100mm.

Expensive, but it is a well-proven design.
This would be better looking on a road/cross type frame, but I'm guessing you'd want tool-free operation for racing?

Ok, quite a bit written here about trp hylex already but couldn't find a definite answer so... The hose and fittings for the hylex. Is it a proprietary standard or can other brands (eg shimano) work. I'm probably getting a pair and have read about the front hose being too short for large frames, and the trp hose kit seems both expensive and hard to get a hold of. Tagging various people who seem to have experience @svendhöek @Hulsroy @edscoble

You can use any hose but need a specific thingy from tektro/TRP.
It comes with the bleed kit which you need anyway, and sometimes a spare thingy comes with the levers. If you are thinking about the banjo thingy, that can be reused I believe. It has been a while since I've fiddled with hylex and I only did it once.

AFAIK It's just shimano, TRP share the design of Shimano hydraulic, you can even use Shimano calipers with the TRP Hylex which is one of the main appeal for me.

Goody. Thanks. Now to decide on 8, 9 or 10 speed bar end shifter.
-
• #2249
8 or 10 speed, 9 speed isn't worth it.

Odd numbers are shit.
Dunno, no experience of them. Only have maxles here. I think the Trance is bolt through 12mm, and that's DT RWS jobby.
So, DT Swiss maybe?
