Anyone know anything about disc brakes?

  • probably would have... Curse my lack of googling.
To be honest now that I've taken the plunge in ordering BB7s (assuming they work) I'd rather use something that works straight up, than make something that doesn't really work work (if that makes sense).

  • What fork / hub combo are you using? I've put spyres on a few bikes to far and have not run up against this issue.

  • It's a Shutter precision PD-8 with a Kinesis Tracer 1.5 fork using a shimano flat mount to 160mm post mount adaptor.
Perhaps if the fork were made for post and not flat it would have been okay.

  • I had similar issues. Spyres and sp dynamo. I solved it with a spacer. Do you not need to move the whole caliper over now?

  • Have moved whole caliper, and moved pads, and generally done a bunch of fiddling with no joy.

  • It's the fork, I had the same hubs, and just about gotten away with the clearance (post mount), then removed it and sent full hydraulic (TRP Hylex).

  • You could try a larger disc. Might just get you enough space. A spyre will take a 180mm

  • Same hub here, took a bit of fiddling to get to get a spyre set up with a surly Pacer IS mount fork. But got there in the end without a spacer.

  • My BB7 road are the worst, actually hate them. MTB versions are still pretty good if you don't want fluid breaks.

  • Fuck BB7s, I got the one on my polo bike working well with an avid flat lever but with drop levers they suck. I was forever fettling them and a tiny amount of rotor rub was impossible to get rid of.

Bought Spyres, fitted them in 15 minutes and they were bang on straight away. Even with the stock pads I'm far more impressed with them than I was with the BB7s.

  • BB7s work brilliantly in my experiences, just not with normal brake cableset.

  • I was also plagued by punctures when I ran Grand Bois tyres... #binscobled

  • The mtb ones are fine, my first go on the roady douchebag versions has left me less than impressed, and I'm far from a disc brake virgin. Noisy and I don't think even compressionless super housing will help.

  • First go being proper riding, not setting up or fixing, maybe they're as inconsistent as the fables say.

  • I don't think even compressionless super housing will help.

TBF, certain brake levers doesn't help, like the old 105 levers, the recent levers (4700, 5800, 6800 etc.) work a lots better with single sided disc, some singlespeed levers such as the Cane Creek SCR-5 work brilliantly.

Oddly enough, BB7 and 4600 levers work well with normal housing.

  • It's not the levers, I can compensate enough with my hands to know that the problem isn't feel or lever throw or whatever, it's just shit, noisy callipers. They may well be inconsistent though, I've known MTB versions that are much better than others.

  • Is Tiagra hydro disc available yet? And more importantly will the STIs work with Ultegra mechs?

  • Avid list Force as working well with BB7, I mean considering its the same company one would hope... Planning on upgrading from plain housing to the goodridge housing at some point so that should help.

  • In my experience SRAM levers work well with Avid BB5/7.

Compressionless cable housing is a requirement not an option though. Cable pull disc brakes just don't really work without it, despite what others might claim.

  • If the levers don't pull enough cable, the "un-pulled" state will hold the pads closer to the rotor, assuming the same bitepoint.

  • Something to note:

Any adjustments to get the non-static pad closer to the rotor should always be done via the red bit.

The arm on bb7s should never be actuated/tensioned to move the pads closer before securing the cable. i.e. should always be at 5 o'clock not 4 or 3 when the cable is tightened. This is due to the bearing and ramp mechanism which moves the pad (if you have serviced one or looked at the manual you'll know this).

No time for a detailed explanation on the mechanics why you shouldnt but it has got to do with the way the bearing sits when you apply your brakes.

  • For realz, I know all that, they're just a bit shit.

  • Glad this fad is over
