  • I have around 8 pairs and wear them daily.

    You must buy big shoes.

  • i was lucky it was only -5/7, and i was mostly apres skiing :)

  • I like to wear my TT skin suit for apres ski. Always breaks the conversational ice.

  • Swrve jumper?!

Cycle stuff is fine for light skiing to lunch and dicking around.

Wouldn't be caught dead off piste in deep powder without a proper technical outerlayer, snow skirt, integrated pants, proper gloves and a really good helmet. But then I would never hire skis and definitely NEVER hire boots.

Also if it hits -20 or starts throwing down heavy snow you're going to be fucked wearing a jumper/fleece and pipe gloves or endura gloves. Leather or goretex - or leather and gore tex (ftw)..
Remember it's the mountains, not London.
Like everything else, it depends how far you're pushing yourself and the gear.
I must agree... Im not a fan of dying and prefer the correct clothing. Its a bugger being stuck on a chair and freezing your balls off cause you have the wrong kit.

  • Does anyone remember when skiing in jeans was the the thing to do?

I'm surprised Decathlon has not been mentioned yet.

pfff - only in America. I couldn't imagine anything colder/worse

  • It's even worse being stuck TO a chair lift coz you went nude night skiing...

    This.

Nothing is worse than wearing improper clothing on mountains. The only gear that can cross both activities is possibly spring skiing attire, and base layers. I wear my soft shell for winter riding, but the jacket is absolute fail mid-winter skiing.

Also, layers are important. Thin outer shell that is extremely water proof yet breathable with thermals underneath.

  • my favorite :)

  • I dont really use the knee pads, but when its raining or icy i use the hip protector because i spend so much time on the asphalt. My next purchase will be POC long sleeve impact vest.

Your next purchase should be stabilisers...

  • and ruin the lines on my bike?

  • do hed make trispok stabilisers? Could be THE hot look for 2011

  • cant find anything on google...

  • bloody google.. ask jeeves ftw right?

    winky guy

  • get some winter cycling gear that would also work well on the slopes?

Oddly I have always worked the other way round, I find a decent shell snowboard jacket pisses all over most cycling specific waterproofs i've ever owned in every regard, other than being reflective.

As others also state, baselayers are a no brainer for both.

I have also boarded in my Swrve hoodie, and it worked pretty well, but only later in the season when it was warmer. No chance i'm relying on it if i'm going backcountry. All depends on your requirements.

Slopes that work well on winter cycling gear?

  • Baselayers, glove liners/thin gloves, and buff can all be used for both. Someone mentioned Decathlon upthread, it's worth checking there for cheap stuff. They do Merino tops for £20.

  • I actually used the old Swrve Mikwaukee jacket when I went skiing last year - combine with a baselayer and jumper, it was perfect (and a lots easier than a proper ski jacket).

downside - snow will able to get up right in your jacksie.

  • Go cross-country skiing - problem solved and much more fun!

    Missing out.

The other week it had been dumping an lot so for a day I hired a pair of next seasons black crows camox in 186 (130-98-126 IIRC) with front rocker and had a sick day shredding, but then maybe that's me. Always have my own skis with me though.

Agreed on never hiring boots though.

  • buy boots, hire skis, always.

  • Do you hire some kind of bastardised touring ski?

  • Can''t believe no one's mentioned sunglasses...

  • Goggles or GTFO

  • +1
If you can wear glasses you clearly aren't going fast enough.
