Excuse me linking to the daily heil but:

  • Since I got neg repped twice in this thread I'd like to state that I have had for some time some fucking aka good aka non-knog lights. And that also I couldn't be more for equal rights.

This is months too late but as this is the Internet I figure people we're concerned and probably still thinking about my earlier posts.

  • Found a Schmidt SON28 (old model) in germany for €162, which I think works out a good £30 or so cheaper than the best UK price I could find (Spa Cycles). I'm on the way to Getting some Fucking Lights!

    I'm thinking that:

  • It seems that now that spring is officially here you don't need to bother with lights, even if you're cycling when it's dark. I reckon 50% of the bikes I saw on my ride home tonight didn't have lights.

  • Winter is officially on it's way. I know this because there's a lady I see almost every morning, around 6:30, cycling the opposite way to me. I've seen her cycling to work for the last 3 years or so. In that time I've never seen her using lights. She relies solely on an orange flouro jacket for visibility.
Winter must be on it's way as she's started wearing it again.

I am actually tempted to buy her a cheap pair of lights as an early Xmas present.

  • Anyone run a light mounted on their helmet?

I have a 300 lumen one on my bars (that I run on low) but thought
the higher place might be a good addition for a secondary less powerful light.

  • I just bought an Abus helmet and it turns out it has an led mounted on the size/fit adjuster on the back. Very cool.

Also polite notice to hipsters on the spice route 1. Those tiny single led button light are not enough. I cannot see you amongst 3 lanes of traffic in the rain whilst you cut through traffic like a dick at the old st roundabout. 2. Laydeez on your sit up and pretend you are Parisian bikes if your long wool coats dangle over your rear lights you might as well not bother and 3. If you can afford an italian lopro or NJS frame with matching spoks then you can afford some form of fucking lights!

Sorry, had to drive way out west and back everyday last week so saw the other side of the arguement.

What possible argument could anyone have for not using lights?!

  • I do use a good set of lights and do not condone anyone not using them. But now and again you do get caught out with out them, extra drink with friends or something over runs.In the winter no excuse due to short daylight hours there is no point taking them off.

Take them off when you go into the pub.

I got caught out last year when some scumbag stole the lights off my bike.

  • I would never leave my lights knowing on my bike, to easy for anyone to make off with £70+.

But what I am saying is you leave the house in the daylight, plan on returning in the daylight but get caught out with something unexpected with no lights. It happens you have three choices then; leave your bike locked up some where, get a taxi or cycle home.

Did not mean argument really more the fact that many cyclists do not drive and if they ever saw what drivers have to go through when negotiating busy central London traffic and how invisible cyclists with inadequate/no lights are then they would get some good ones and also change their riding styles.

Yeah it happens, I just don't think it's happening to the hundreds of people I see every week with no lights!
Even a shitty little one that you can leave on the bike on the rear only would be better.

Ah right, fair enough - I would have thought it's pretty obvious to anyone but as you say, apparently not!

  • I can imagine the logic though..

"I paid £50 for this piece of shit to get me to work. It's cheaper than the Tube."
"How bloody much do lights cost?!"

Even the cheapest set is gonna be what £20? That's gotta be the same value as some of the shitters I see people riding to work.

Obviously I'm not justifying it and often call people out for it but just thinking that's what people without lights are thinking. More expensive bikes without lights though.. hmm.. not sure. Accident or stupidity. I've done it myself though so I'm never too harsh on 'em. "Your batteries are flat" suffices.

You can get perfectly decent lights for a couple quid.

Poundland even does decent lights for £1 a pair. They are the same kind that used to cost about £6 on ebay a few years back. I used a set for ages, they were fine but the batteries died a little quicker than quality lights and they were slightly less robust. But still good.

  • Just done the de-rig at a rave in shoreditch, while waiting in the van for the load out saw all the punters go, at least 50 on bikes, all utterly off their chops on pills, coke, balloons and overpriced RedStripe and not a single light between any of them. Scary times...

  • hmmm lights, I have some, but I always seem to lose the brackets during the summer and then can't find them again, then they seem to be tied onto my bag with string and tape mostly.

Can someone recommend an adequate set of lights which attach to the bike without the need for brackets. Pretty please because I find it really hard to be interested by bike lights.

  • Get some moon lights.

  • Knog blinders - too small, right ?

  • RSP Astrum I find is a good rear light that will clip onto your bag, pretty bright, not too pricey.

Sumo just got me a pair of these. They are quite wee but after charging them they throw out a lot of light, and they're USB charged not battery so you can keep the charge topped-up which is nice.

  • Does anyone else find lots of lights get darker over time irrespective of having new batteries? I'm talking about cheap and mid priced lights... I tend to end up buying new lights every year.

+1 I got one of these but smashed it on a forum ride to Cambridge - it fell off as I was going over a cattle grid and then got run over by a car :/ Bought a new one the next day because it's ridiculously bright for under 15 quid.

I was waiting at a traffic light the other day with it switched on and a car pulled up behind me. I was turning left so I looked back to make eye contact with the driver and signal what I was doing and he was sitting in his car shielding his eyes from it with an expression of utter rage on his face. Ho Ho. (I turned the bike slightly to one side so it wasn't directly in his line of sight).
