  • Is that a horse-chestnut (conker)?

  • Puffball and some crabapples near my work. Wife has banned me from eating foraged fungi so I left the puffball.

  • Found a load of parasols today. Plenty just right for the picking. Left them as per my wife’s wishes. Found some more elderberries in the woods which hadn’t gone over so grabbed them to add to the freezer stocks.

  • Going to male some more cheese with this lot and more. Tree they came from is loaded with fruit!

  • I made rosehip syrup last week, turns out it tastes pretty much exactly like crab apple jelly.

  • I’ve some syrup from last winter. Might see if it’s still edible (pourable?) and if time has exerted any noticeable (positive!) difference. Will report back. Hopefully :)

  • Ha! OK cool thanks.

  • Brilliant. Can’t wait to find some quinces (or medlars) up here. I’ve got the week off work so going to make some elderberry vinegar that I’ve been told very good things about by a friend.

  • I made crab apple jelly and my partner made rose hip syrup last year. I can't say I agree with you I'm afraid.

One was delicious sweet appley goodness, the other was left at the back of the fridge for too long and then discarded.

  • Ha! Rosehip syrup is not as incredible as I had hoped but apparently it's good for you so will be consumed..

  • I must get out and search for food - a neighbour found this the other day

  • Halfway through harvesting 30kg of porcini in the Swedish forest

  • The mystery fruit (<<<<<) was a crabapple. Sleep easy lufgus.

Also found some fresh (ish) hazelnuts down by the canal which I’d never tried and quite liked. Would snaffle again.

  • Grab the hazelnuts whilst you can, the squirrels nab em all round here

  • We'll likely all be eating Squirrel come February, let them have the Hazelnuts...

  • See: Brunswick Stew.

  • It's that time of year again, nearly 7 pounds of sloes picked in 30 minutes, easily done when you live in the land of the roadkill eaters....

  • Nice!

Can anyone tell me if apples growing along main roads will accumulate toxins or pollutants in them? Also, you can stew eating apples too right?

  • I don't know for definite but I generally don't pick any fruit that is growing close to a busy road for that reason. That said, it does depend on the volume of traffic. If it is a country lane then yes, major A road then no.

Eating apples can be stewed but sometimes they won't cook down to the same extent as an eater.

  • Also, I must get out and find some sloes/damsons as that ^^^ looks delicious!

  • Made quince membrillo. Delicious and simple to make, just 1 quince made a over cup of membrillo.
