  • Tech question: Has there ever been a hub produced where you can switch from fixed to free with a thumb shifter? They now have bmx hubs that you can roll forward and back on without pedalling...

I am in no way down wiv da kidz, but I think freecoasters have been around for long ting. There's a stupid SPAM (or maybe Sturmey) hub that switches between fixed and free with only three turns of a Philips (IE shit) screw. It only costs about £200. Just go freewheel, there really is no reason to play fixed anymore, unless you're a perma-goalie.

There are almost no reasons to ride fixed in general, unless you're on a velodrome, but that's a different story.

  • Yeah, I liked the courts, I think the play is a lot more open, meaning the games will flow better. The two big courts would be my choice, the fences are already going to need some work with barriers etc, so to try and stump up money for even more wood would be difficult. The spectator spot in the centre is great too, so I reckon the next step is to secure the spot for the day, then get the leisure centre on board to maybe help with site management, then we can sit down properly and draft up some plans. @MG do you want to set a rough new meeting date (based on the dates you have for the council meeting(s) etc.)?

  • Thanks for the info Dan, but I think without something that allows you to switch while still on the bike it's not worth it. I won't be switching to freewheel, doesn't work for me, as i feel there's not enough control and I like having to think about what my feet are doing, makes the game harder and for that reason more fun. If i used freewheel I'd go about 3 times as fast and probably have a massive crash at some point, so it's also safer.

The only problem it causes me is a slight delay getting back onto my pedals when I put a foot down, and you're out of the game at that moment anyway

So are we going to play at small heath on sunday again?

  • Hey Birmingham

Just to let you know that the Brighton tournament is now accepting entrants.

It would be good to see some of you there, we can sort out housing if needed.

MG/4ndy, hope you don't mind I put our name down for registered interest..

  • I would love the chance to play as piggies this year. Miss us guys! Have to see what the boss says though...

  • As it looks like polo is off tomorow night, does anyone who owns a ball (i don't have my own) want to do some shooting/goalie practice at highgate one night in the week? improve your tekkers for sunday...

  • You'll need to improve your night vision if you're going to play at Highgate at night.

If my bloody frame arrives, I may go to Highgate Friday morning for an hour or so. Any good?

Brighton looks good - me and MG will probably have to flip for it.

  • is your frame in the country yet?

  • obviously not enough hamsters to turn the wheels to generate power in the sweatshop..

  • is your frame in the country yet?

Nope. It won't officially be late until next week though...

    sorry i meant calthorpe.

    lectures friday morning sorry

  • Is anyone considering Brighton? I may be interested.

  • ^^ I'd love to do this sometime Stu but I'm working loads :( Maybe we should incorporate some drills pre-polo?

this would be an easy way to improve our game i think. even just 20 mins of shooting practice, one-on-one with the keeper in rotation, before we start the games. lets do it

  • Yep, mutually beneficial if those who need keeper practice rotate in goal too! Basically the goalie game with less fucking around.

  • Its all about getting to polo early. If we play at small heath we'll have the option of practising on the other court while not in a game.

  • Its all about getting to polo early.

    So true.

Let's not play at Small Heath though - it's a chance for me, Andy and Hyper to practice on a normal sized court.

  • You can play at highgate after

  • Too much faff cycling between courts. I wouldn't mind the larger court, it's the larger court with worse-than-Calthorpe-gaps which puts me off.

  • Bearwood has a court!..spotted on my way home after work..looks freshly built as well..going to check it tomorrow hopefully.

  • My missus needs the car on Sunday, so in order for me to get a lift/bring goals I'd need to stay until 2.30pm. Anyone up for that?

  • I have to return a favour regarding cooking so prolly not..on another note..finally managed to get a TIG set in my work area..so uprights..crossbars and various connection items can be made for the bases via the works scrap bin.....no harm in that eh..

  • Big turnout means plenty of standing around tomorrow, EMM are you going to bring your camera and do some filming? I reckon some mini-interviews, especially with the working professional/female/British Asian contingent would be useful. Cheesy, but useful.

Also, with such a big (potential) turnout, we should consider splitting into two shuffle-groups for fast and slow games. It would be good if me, 4ndy and Hyper can get a few games against three b-players, too.

  • Awesome turnout today, possibly our best ever?

I really enjoyed the games we played as Black Stabbath so big up to everyone for being patient with us.

It would be cool if we could come up with some system for organising throw-ins when we have 10+ people. Something that means people get good games with appropriate opponents, but also some more randomised ones for the newer players to gain experience playing with/against people better than them. And of course everyone playing an even amount of games.

Maybe split into two groups on ability (refer to last seeding?), have one fast game followed by one slow game, then a random game. But how to deal with odd numbers? Some people would get to play a lot more than others... It would work perfectly with twelve, but only with twelve.
