Paul, those shots are awesome!
I take it with this Celestron you can literally just whack it into the DSLR as if it was an over-elaborate zoom lens.
Cheers - and yes, although with the scope being the size of a big waste paper bin and weighing about 15lbs it's more a case of attaching the camera to the rear end of the scope (using a T-thread to EOS adapter) rather than putting the scope on the camera, if you see what I mean. And it's not even as elaborate as a zoom lens - it's fixed focal length.

So, after a bit more research, this scope and mount (Skywatcher Explorer 130P SynScan AZ GOTO) are £40 more and you get a larger primary mirror (130mm, 30% larger than a 114mm)... Sound like a good deal? I'm ready to make the jump to lightspeed... :]

"Its sharp optics and relatively small central obstruction ensures that it delivers bright, diffraction-limited images….can view a true field in excess of 2°….will give you memorable views of the Moon and bright planets…In short, it’s a great all-rounder in its class"
Ade Ashford, www.scopetest.comI've seen a lot of people praise this sort of scope as an excellent starting point. But beware of the dreaded aperture fever (fnarr). You will soon be wanting a bigger mirror - 6", 8" and upwards. And will you be able to buy from a shop that provides good support? There aren't many left round here: Telescope House has moved to Kent, but there's still Widescreen Centre just off Baker Street and there's an excellent chap down in Purley called Bernard Karpinski (www.modernastronomy.com) and he knows his stuff and seems to be able to match or beat anyone else's prices. Bern sold me his old 8" reflector some years back as well as my current Celestron jobbie and numerous astro-toys.

Yeah, I figured I should buy as big a mirror as I could (without going absolutely mental and blowing my budget)... If I really get into it I'll turn the spare room into an observatory cum bike storage space and get a 12" Newtonian in there, I'm pretty sure the landlord wouldn't mind me sticking a hole in the roof... He's gonna get it redone in the next coupla years anyway... ;]
Cheers Paul... gets credit card out -

I just bought a telescope... :)
well done that man
I got in such shit when I did that about 8 years ago. I just turned up at the front door at the end of the working day lugging a huge cardboard box. To be fair, we were stony broke at the time but I had just spent a couple of weeks staring at the most amzingly clear skies (by London standards) and couldn't help myself.
I still do have to be careful when buying new scopes etc, as I need to make sure that there's still room in the shed for the extra bikes that sometimes have to be bought.
next SE beers on Blythe Hill Fields then?

night rides through out the summer then joe ?
where has " dark skies " near london ? bowland forest is a bit far to go every weekend -

Richmond Park's quite dark at night, but keep clear of the rutting deer, they're bad for your optics. Round Knockholt and the top of Sundridge Hill Lane is pretty good to - we could do a combined fixed hillclimb/stargazing session some time.

Ace! Best let us all know how you get on because if I can find the room I might do the same.
I like Paul's idea of a night ride too- is it easy to get into Richmond Park when it's dark?

http://www.veryamateur.co.uk/I don't doubt you for a second Clefty - but with a web address like "very amateur" does it feature pictures of planets or something not exactly safe for work?

Hey Joe, where you goin' with that telescope in your hand? Has it arrived?
I spotted the ISS on Sunday evening through gaps in the clouds as I was arriving home at about 9.20 and then last night I had all the gear set up for the 9.45 overhead pass and messed up the camera settings - all overexposed and blurred as I should have been shooting at 1/250th or faster. Oh well, next time. Saturn was looking great though up under the lion's tail.

I took some shit pics of the ISS last night too. It was a perfect sky for it.
Hoping for more of the same tonight. Except for the shit pics.
That Star Wars reference was all I need to hear... ;]
Cheers, dude... I'll have a closer look...
