How do Loakes compare to other English made shoes? I've heard differing things.
I can't really compare because I've never owned any other nice shoes. What I can say is that they are perfectly finished, become more beautiful with wear and make you want to look after them. My leather soled ones wore through more quickly than I would have expected but I think unless you drive to your desk job or have them for dress shoes then leather soles aren't completely fit for purpose.
They are entry level as far as price is concerned but the next level is close to double the price and I can't see myself dropping that kind of coin on shoes even if I had the means. These shoes are made with pride and, with some maintenance, will last for many years. Plus IMO the designs are classic, not deliberately trendy like Grensons so that adds to longevity.

Interesting many are having a dig at Grenson. Yeah, they're cashin in on the current fashionista/hype wave but they still construct traditional shoes (double sole etc) made in the UK that aren't likely to turn up on the usual sartorial blogs.

There's a third, invisible choice? Yeah. I'll take that one.

If we're discussing Loake (which I quite like, my first ever entry level ankle boot was a pair of Loake Cromwells that got worn to death over a period of about 8 years) then what do the denizens of this thread make of Alfred Sargent?

There's a list on page 6 old fruit, and though SuperPrecise didn't like it at the time, its not bad. Alfred Sargent are in there - and I consider them a bastion of proper shoe-making. I haven't owned any, but when I do, I will be right about how good they are.
I am very biased. Bring on the law suits.

I know a gentleman on Walworth Rd, Fred The Shoe is his name, the shop has been part of a family business for the best part of 100 years not unlike Edwardes Cycles further up on the same side. Anyway, Fred often gets in 'seconds' from Alfred Sargent that go for a song. By seconds I mean a single stitch is slightly out of place, for someone to notice they'd have to take the shoes off your feet sit down and study them for a bit, even then they could be wrong. I have a few pairs and bloody lovely they are too :)
You gents should check him out. The front of the shop is called 'Men's Traditional Shoes' they also do work boots.

Australians and taste/style/fashion?
Never taken the advice of one yet. You lot think R.M. Williams is the epitome of style.

Pffft!
English people dress like shit.
Fair play Rob, who gives a fuck anyway. Good post. Notice that no one's saying they don't look good or aren't well made.
'They were much cheaper when I first had them' and 'they were much cooler when I first had them' are obvious hipster-in-denial comments.
Having said that I opted out of buying a pair of RW chukkas cos they're a bit everywhere at the moment. Got these instead:
They're also shoes for the impressionable cretin-around-town, but I had 'smart-looking tan leather trainers' on my shopping list and these had 70% off (wiping out the hipster tax and then some).
