  • Donated again and blogged.

  • To be fair to the US, they simply have a different system. She ought to be able to obtain substantial compensation for her injuries and for the costs she has incurred from the driver or his employer. I am sure there are a number of excellent contingency fee lawyers who would be happy to take her case.

I assumed it was a fee which included pursuit of legal aid...

  • C'mon peoples... 10 dolares are like 6 pounds.
2 pints off your body, converted into something really helpful.

  • Dear Buro 9 Limited* or To Whom It May Concern;

Thank you for your recent $100 contribution. Emily is overwhelmed, as are her mom, boyfriend, and I, from all the people who have Chipped In. She is still in recovery and struggling at NYU but has a positive outlook in life. At first she didn't want to live anymore because she was informed about her vision. Her left eye was too traumatized and has a zero possibility of her sight to return. Her right eye has a slight 5% chance for recovery. However, with a lot of faith and hope we continue to pray for her to see again. Miracles have already occurred, we witnessed it ourselves.

After facial surgery, left femur fracture replaced with a titanium rod, pelvis fractures with screws, abdomen incision to relieve swelling, and a stroke causing slight right arm paralysis, she came out of her silent world after her boyfriend used his index finger writing on the palm of her hand.

Please share with friends the website www.emiliegossiaux.com which is still a work in progress.

You can also find news articles from "The New York Times," at http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/22/nyregion/22about.html?_r=2 or from "The Palm Beach Post" http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/dreyfoos-graduate-works-her-way-back-after-what-1145256.html

Above all continue to keep Emily in your thoughts and prayers.

    Sincerely,

    Eric L. Gossiaux

    • Buro 9 Limited being the registered company that I run which is what "owns" LFGSS... this being the response from the donation made on behalf of the forum.
  • Yeah I think they did a mass email, but still nice to be kept in the loop

  • I figured it was a mass email... just received a second one, and who the hell would address "Buro 9 Limited". Still... really good of them to find the time to let everyone know how things are going. Sounds pretty horrific, but at the same time heart-melting (boyfriend finger-writing).

  • She might have to learn deafblind signing, which is really tough (and 3x as hard than normal sign language) to learn on top of everything she's already going through. :( Fingers crossed she will continue to recover

  • Actually they're sending them out by hand, cut 'n' pasted from a template:

    Dear Buro 9 Limited or To Whom It May Concern;

Thank you again for your recent $100 contribution. We do appreciate your continued support and the spreading of her condition.

Please continue to keep Emily in your thoughts and prayers.

    Sincerely,

    Eric L. Gossiaux

    Hey Eric,

Are you sending these out individually? If you need a hand with mailing list software or something like that to keep everyone up to date, let me know. I run www.lfgss.com and will be able to set something up for you if you need.

    Cheers

    David

    Hi David,

Yes, I am sending emails individually to everyone who has Chip(ed) In by "copy and paste" a word document. Of course I do change the amount and the name of the individuals who have contributed. As for a software program to list and answer mailings would be a simpler way. But thanks either way, Emily, Alan, Mom and I, are graciously thankful to the world of people who have prayed and thought of Emily.

This Friday Emily will be released from NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases and will continue outpatient therapy for a long time. Today a counselor for the blind came and gave some good information about assistance that is available for anyone who is blind.

    Thanks again,

    Eric L Gossiaux

It's good hearing the progress, and it's good seeing the support her family are giving her... even running the fund-raising is a logistical burden and clearly they'd rather be with her helping directly.

Another bump to anyone who needs it... give what you can afford to.

  • I have been tweeting the website every now & then. I suggest that everyone else who has a twitter account does likewise.

I see the fund has hit $20 000. Only another $180 000 to go!

  • reiki, i personally had some reiki after a crash where i smashed my head, it helped heal me nicely.

(she is something like 5% chance of sight in one eye)

  • She might have to learn deafblind signing, which is really tough (and 3x as hard than normal sign language) to learn on top of everything she's already going through. :( Fingers crossed she will continue to recover

I didn't know anything about how deafblind ppl communicate before today so I googled it and read this guys website:
    http://www.deafblind.com/index.html
    Fascinating.

  • I watched a documentary on it when I was a teenager, that's how I learnt about it. Really heartbreaking though.

    Hopefully she'll power on through.

  • I read the autobiography of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helen_Keller when I was a kid. The passages in which she describes her first communications with Anne Sullivan through hand-signing are electrifying.

  • Bump

  • Bumping again as this forum moves fast.

  • Up you go...

  • It's good that the link was re-tweeted so many times now.
Everyday there's someone who hasn't heard about it and hopefully they all chip in.

  • bump.

  • And again.

  • :)
