There has to come a time though when the current veleodrome/track becomes unsafe for use and will have to close, I wonder when that time will come?

About 3 years ago, as soon as the fixie-skidders invaded.

From today's Building Design, a weekly design
tossragpaper for architects:From the article:
it has been out of action for a couple of season
Don't know where he's getting his facts from, been used more in the last couple seasons than ever in my life time as Rob's post suggests.Attracting visitors definitely isn't the main problem, saturday inductions are going from strength to strength, track league is very well attended and next season HH has 15 weekend track meetings, 3x as many as any other (outdoor) track in the country.

I had the initial response you had, i.e. they'd got their facts wrong. But, there were a couple of seasons a few years ago when the track was closed due, as far as I'm aware, to issues between Dulwich Estates and Southwark Council. That's when the VCL stepped in and were granted a succession of short term leases to operate the track. I think that may be what the writer is referring to.

The more I look at the plans, the more problems I see with the practicality/feasibility of this proposal.
Far too many points to list here! You can feedback your ideas here:

Did you attend the meeting? I ask because I thought it was clear that to save Herne Hill a long term viable plan was required so that Dulwich Estates would grant a longer term lease than the current one year ones it's giving to VCL.
From what I understand these plans are just a bit of blue sky thinking, not practically applied in any way.
Does anyone know anything more about the lease issue?
From what I understand they need a 15 year extension, upon which granting british cycling will pony up some cash for refurbishment and link it in the Olympics somehow.seems realistically good news..

I hope we keep the 1948 olympic track, it just needs a lot of loving and deep pockets. Maybe a tv company would make a show of the new and old site and bring it to the masses. The more it's in the public eye, the better it is. Keep the faith.

It's not an issue of love or deep pockets. The issue is creating a long-term, sustainable business and whether DE give a shit enough to grant a long lease if one theoretically exists.
