I'd love to understand the tax economy a little bit better.
There are 20 different taxes in the UK, or thereabouts. Would it be possible to have just one means tested tax that everybody had to pay on UK income with no exceptions? What would those tax bands have to look like? I suspect that if somebody actually did the sums, and all companies had to pay it, it might not look too different to the current income tax bands.

No, George III did in 1760, because he was in debt: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crown_Estate. I think you are confusing with tax on private income, e.g. the Duchy of Lancaster, on which the Queen has paid tax since the early 90s.
