I have recently had a discussion with an American who chided me for not being excited about the royal birth. I explained that I found the whole thing depressing. She responded by saying that it was a whole lot better than what they had in the US. There, apparently, they have the Kardashians. She said that the British royal family was infinitely better than them. I asked if the Kardashians had their pictures on all the stamps, bank notes and coins of the US and whether they had the power to veto legislation. Apparently they do not. My American friend suddenly understood my constitutional concern. Big on constitutional issues are the Americans.

Get a grip of yourself man. How would abolishing Sir Elton save any money? He's paid tax here for years, unlike the Royals who only relatively recently started to contribute.

It was a tad tongue in cheek about Sir Elton, but seeing as he is a Knight of the realm, are we going to abolish the Queen but keep the Knights? Or does Sir Elton get the chop as well?

My view is that Monarchy all things considered in term positive PR for Britain most likely earns their keep and then some. You make not like it but clearly there are many many people inside and outside of Britain who like and enjoy having the British Monarchy and think they are value for money.

I live in France where the current head of state is colloquially referred to as l'imbécile. In recent memory the US democratically voted in a man twice who actually was to all intents and purposes is an imbecile. Maybe there is a value in having a head of state who is above politics?

Providing they fund themselves, entirely, I agree with you.
They should also pay tax on all their earnings in Britain and give back the land they took centuries ago. Last but not least they should compensate all former colonies for damages done by citizens who served on behalf of the monarchy.

Was pondering last night how the justification for royalty has slipped, over the ages, from God's own representation on Earth to simply being a good boost for the tourist industry.

Notwithstanding how the lizards feel about this monumental downgrade it does beg another question: How much would the tourist industry be boosted if we used all of that money to offer Free flights to the UK and a lovely big hotel on the end of the mall. Cab fare from Heathrow thrown in...

Disney World is also good for tourism and providing their main attraction is a castle and some.sort of palace I've got a feeling the royal family might fit in rather well. On top of that the average age in Florida is pretty close to the old hag. The sooner they pack up the better.
