The policing of the demo's so far seems to be disorganised and way out of whack to what is actually going on. In brighton everyone knew we would start the march at old steine and march to the council building in hove, yet the police tried to block the march several time and bring in more heavily armed police personel. The reason I think they must be doing this is to slow down/hault the march and to video and photograph those in the march. Everyone know is talking about Kettling, and as soon as people think it's happening they get angry, scared - essentially feelings that cause the violence and unrest. Apart from Millbank tower, there has, I believe only been arrests/violence when police have employed their tactics of crowd 'organization'.

Always reminds me of:
'We have leaders who are anxious, we have captains not courageous, captains tumbling into madness ...'
Midnight Oil, 'Bedlam Bridge'
A ridiculous and unconvincing performance.

The lib dems are in a difficult and pathetic position. That was almost inevitable given their decision to enter government with so few MPs elected, and i think they've handled the spin on this issue astonishingly badly. The initial attempt to skip over the fact that they are going back on explicit personal pledges as if they didn't matter is stupid beyond belief.
But beyond the spin I can't see what they could do better. Would a minority Tory government really be better? Would voters really thank the Lib dems with their votes if they brought down the government over this issue and forced another election? Which other policies would you make more tory in trade for making this one more liberal? Would the press give them an easier time if they made the coalition's internal wrangling more public?
With hindsight I can say they should have made their decision to abandon their pledge explicit at the time they joined the coalition, claimed 'the tories are making us do it' & 'what we are getting in return will be worth it', and finally explained that free education is still their aim which they will deliver just as soon as enough people vote them the power to actually do it.

no idea, it is just the picture accompanying a piece about the protests on the sky news website. says a police rider knocked off horse by violence and injured leg.
