yes much better as long as you have a proper masonry wall, i've used for 2" x 8" oak plank shelves.

need a good fore/aft, left/right reference to get all the holes bored true, with a long woodbit

alternatively, i read that you can rip a cheap hollow door down the middle (or thirds, discarding the centre section) and simply slide the door over the dowel rods, no pesky drilling of wood required!

Interesting, we've got enough old doors we could rip apart and make shelves out of. The previous owners of the house left a stack of 5 thick pieces of plank with a really nice woodstain on which we have been meaning to make use of since day one.

That's going to be at least £50 in brackets alone though, this DIY business isn't cheap.

I quite liked the look of these aluminium ones in B&Q, they look a bit shite in the pics though.

My sister got some similar ones fairly recently to redo our parents front path. Think they were new rather than reclaims but will ask her where she got them

Turns out my sis used the same place Bothwell suggested, Original Features. She said they weren't exact replicas, a bit thinner and metric, but the best she could find.

Some bozo bummed my mirror whilst drunk and pulling off his socks, causing it to break.
It's now in two big bits so would like to cut the wonky edge off and sand it down.

Does anyone have the tools I can borrow? Just a glass cutter and possibly glass grinder.
I've done some stained glass window making before in my youth, as my dad was into it and so can operate one of those glass grinder machines.

If not, can do it for me or recommend somewhere for me to go, pref Central London.

Quick question; the piping between the mains water stopcock and the boiler inlet has started making a constant burbling noise in the last couple of days. It doesn't matter if we're using water, heating etc and hot water / heating still works.

Is it something I need to worry about?

Storage solutions sought: Was thinking about putting bookshelves at a high level (above the tops of the doors) to make a continuous line the full length, and both sides of, a 7m ish corridor. Floating shelves would be ideal.

But given that I've run some form of problem almost everytime I've drilled into something in this flat I reckon the chances of being able to securely mount the brackets for floating shelves exactly where I need them the whole length of the corridor are practically nil. Plus the inernal walls are pretty thin single skin cinder block. I'm wondering about an alternative.

Now considering keeping books on exiting units elsewhere and installing high level bespoke cupboards for other storage. Anyone hired a chippy to do this sort of thing? Done it yourself? Tips?

Suspend shelves from ceiling beams, rather than floating shelves? I've seen it done with wires, chains or rigid supports (never tried myself though!)

Hmmmm. Possible, although 1967 built low rise block's ceiling will be concrete slab so chance of hitting re-bar is high. It'll also be neighbour's floor so maybe not ideal.

how about supports drilled where you can like this

maybe start marking the places where you can drill and then stick up some paper to plan it.
