  • Does anybody have any experience replacing a Caldensate cartridge?

  • Where about's are you?

  • Had one removed a few years ago. Total was about 3.5k. About £500 for structural engineer and building control fees, and the rest on labour and materials. Cost obviously dependent on numerous factors: size, existing foundations etc. In my case, they had to dig out a 1x1x1m pit and fill with concrete, then build engineering brick piers on which to rest the steel. Can't remember who did it now!

  • @Timmy2wheels Cheers for the info, I've been recommended a structural engineer so going to get him to come over and see what's possible. We're in a first-floor flat, not sure if that makes it easier or harder – a concrete pit in the floor is definitely not an option for us!

@lynx I'm in Bethnal Green, do you know someone?

  • Anyone had ikea custom personlig worktops made?

  • Anyone recommend a good ladder/place to buy a good ladder?

  • We're north so can't recommend somewhere specific, but most timber merchants should be able to sort you out.

  • Well there are three types:

    Class I - Industrial
Class II (or EN131) - Trade
    Class III - Domestic

I'd go for a EN131 for pure home use as it'll last longer and take more abuse than a Class III domestic.

  • I got me one of these and it's the shit, son. Gets you proper high.

  • Cheers, that's good info

  • That's overkill for me. Probably going for a telescopic one, just for loft access and window cleaning.

  • I have a 4m telescopic and it's invaluable, especially cause we've got fuck all storage.

  • Can ask a few people.

  • Ramsaye I have a triple 3.4m you can borrow if you want.
    I am in Surrey Quays

  • Dehumidifiers, there's been a bit of talk about them on this thread I seem to remember.

I have one in my flat, about 4 or 5 years old, that is probably going for 30 hours a week or so. After running it the past few days it doesn't seem to be extracting any water. I've cleaned the filter but this seems to make no difference. There is definitely moisture there to be sucked up.

Shall I assume it's given up the ghost and buy a new one (and if so, any recommendations) or is there something that is obvious and repairable in them?

  • Cheers @TW

@aggi I am selling one as linked above. It's as new as it has only been used v briefly on a little job I did. Pm me for more info.

  • Thanks for the offer but I'm going telescopic, I've got masses of storage in the roof but only an under stair cupboard until the shed is sorted.

  • Isn't that the approach aggi is taking?

  • There's a few issues. One is my bathroom doesn't have an extractor fan so fills up with steam, I'm planning to redo my bathroom this year which should fix that. I also have single glazing which generates a lot of condensation, that will be replaced sometime but it's not cheap. Finally, I have to dry clothes indoors, no outside space so no way around that.

All in all, a dehumidifier is a reasonable interim solution.

  • bish - 5" extractor on timed circuit

bash - sealed DG unit from wickes; once you've got the knack for the spacer/fix/seal methodology they're a breeze to fit

bosh - underfloor heating tape with insulating mat

  • I live in a Victorian terrace, and I want to run some cables from the back of the house, under my bedroom and into my lounge. The dividing wall between the two is solid, but what will be going on below floor level? Presumably there are going to be holes there somewhere for ventilation which I can pass the cables through.

  • And if not you could drill a hole?
