  • Pure tung oil takes ages to dry. I gave up on it and use the quick drying stuff, which still takes a while.

  • What finish should I use on a birch ply floor? I’m using osmo poly coil raw on the walls. Can I use the same on the floor and then some kind of matte polyurethane? I want the keep the finish as natural as possible but it obviously needs protecting - although it’s not a high traffic area (garden studio)

  • Is Bourne seal still a thing, did my wooden floors about 20 years ago anf the finish was pretty natural

  • Just got an enforcement investigation notice for my garden room.

Mine was built from a kit, and I went to the 2.5m limit but on measuring now it seems to be slightly bigger, 2.53m.

I have a neighbour who talks to me about how a previous owner took 6 inches of his land. Thing is the old fence and boundary is at least a few decades old. Out of good will I was going to let him have the 6 inches but he has called the council and reported my cabin, so f*ck him, I will be erecting something permanent and concreted in right next to that fence if I have to take down the cabin!

  • I don't think you could overcoat the osmo polyx with polyurethane. I used osmo polyx on our hallway floor and it's holding up fine.

  • Can you raise the ground around the structure, even if temporarily?

  • Cool, thanks. Had looked at metal trims, but they come in 2m lengths and the bifolds are about 2.4m.

  • I don't want to make it look like I am covering anything up!

That said, I was planning a small patio area in front of the shed, and as the shed is at the bottom of a hill the only reference ground once patio is in will be quite a bit higher than even the inside floor of the shed

  • The height is taken from the highest point of ground adjacent to the structure, but I think your patio would have to butt right up to it to be taken from that. I can't see an enforcement officer giving two hoots about 3cm, especially as it's at the bottom of a slope and considering the work load most LA planning departments are under at the moment.

  • How has it been measured at 2.53, and by who?

  • You can’t put polyurethane over wax or oil finishes.

  • Are you taking it down?

Might be worth applying for retrospective planning, and looking at planning portal in your area.

The planning applications / reviews of our side & rear neighbours are full of garden room stuff, where the committee has allowed excess height of up to 40cm where the building is timber and doesn't look awful.

  • Can you raise the ground around the structure, even if temporarily?

The height is taken from the original highest point.

For 3cm though, who's to say that's not just measurement error and the original highest point was reduced at some stage.

  • For srs - fuck your neighbour though.

  • You need a ‘forever’ finish on ply, aince you’re not realistically going to be able to sand it back. If there’s a chance you are going to deal with spills and splashes, you’re probably better off with two coats of polyurethane. I hate the stuff normally but on ply flooring I think it’s probably the best option.

Bourne Seal is a solvent based polyurethane if I remember correctly. As such it will probably provide an ‘ambering’ finish but I would be inclined to test it on a scrap piece of ply to make sure the solvent penetration doesn’t create any issues.

  • Structurally, the brackets on the right alcove should probably be further apart, but I wanted the rails to create equal gaps on the wall. The shelves don't feel overly tippy just sitting there and they will be screwed to the brackets so it should be fine. Still need to trim the shelves to depth once the creative director finalises the spacing. Then sand and oil. Shelves are 25mm pine.

  • Wow! What a difference! That's insane

  • Interesting fireplace. Original or installed?

Edit: looks much nicer now it appears to be more normal

  • Definitely installed. The upper skin of brick is about a foot out past the original breast. Took that out and got the original boarded over with a fake opening.

  • Why is your TV so small?
