Plumbing question: everytime I run water in the house the stopcock next to the boiler makes a right racket. It's so loud I'm concerned I'll get into trouble with the neighbours.
The noise stops if I turn said stopcock all the way in, but surely that it's not meant to be turn off all the time? Help please. You could try closing the stopcock down little by little to reduce water pressure and see if it solves the hammering?

The window frames in my new place look pretty bad with paint flaking off. What do people recommend to strip it back with? I am thinking either a heat gun and scrapper or a rotary tool with sandpaper attachment. Pros and cons of each method?
The plan then is either to varnish or repaint depending on the condition of the wood

That does work. When turned off completely :-(

Lolo, try Sacredhart.
Amazing the crap that gets stuck in my brain sometimes. I should probably consult a tradesman to get the blockage removed, am sure it's preventing me learning new stuff.
I've PM'd him. Thanks.

Hi I should probably announce here I'm a plumber.
www.JBPlumbingN16.co.ukI work with some other good tradespeople if people need other bits doing.
@Lolo the stopcock needs servicing or possibly replacing, it will be a worn washer thats vibrating as the water passes by. A modern full bore valve is best.

Hammering is (probably) due to air trapped in the system somewhere, at a highpoint in the pipework.
Find the highest point and drill a hole in it to let the air out- then see if the hammering noise stops.
Don't do this.

Do it.
You know it makes sense.

Looking for a forum hand on this if anyone can help.
We've sprung a leak, specifically from around the grey bit in the picture, when the bath is draining or plug open whilst showering.
The work was done last year by a plumber and was fine until Sunday when kitchen beneath got soaked. On opening panel leg near side wasn't taught, think the slight movement this allowed may have caused problem to develop over time.
Seems to either need the grey bit refitting correctly or replacing.
I've plumbed in a bath before no probs, but not with this kinda plug/overflow mechanism and it's puzzling me how to get it apart.
Looks like it needs to come off, but this isn't proving easy... will I need to break the seal above (around the plug hole) and remove that as part of the whole assembly or should it simply come apart from beneath with a bit of biff?
Any guidance much appreciated, ta.

It most likely needs to be stripped down and refitted. Call a plumber :-)

Thanks Sacredhart. I would have hired you, but I'm in SM4 which is probably a bit too far from N16... Anyone you could recommend? I imagine I should leave it to a professional?

Heat gun and remove the paint. There will probably a couple of coats of gloss and under coat.

And shitloads of lead.
Get an approved filter mask. -

Hence not sanding it, scraping.

Lead vapourizes with the application of heat.

Low heat setting or if you that worried use paint stripper.

Hmmm, I'd already removed the u-bend before posting. When I replaced it just now I had to twist the waste unit and grey seal a little to align, this has immediately stopped the leak (for now at least), tested via emptying baby bath through it. Keeping an eye on it / pan beneath it still for now though. Ta.

I'm not slamming your method, why not just get a decent mask?

As I'm not convinced that a decent mask will get the fumes.

If you can move the lower part its not tight enough hence the leak. You probably tightened it a little when you moved it but it should be tightened properly.
