  • I think I need a cement mixer - lots of small jobs spread over a long period means renting will be uneconomic compared to buying and selling once I'm done. Been looking out for a second hand for ages but nothing coming up that's not fucked or expensive.

Any hot tips on where to buy? Screwfix seems to have a shortage of anything remotely affordable at the moment.

One local for £110 but only 70l. Going to take forever to pour a footing but probably my best bet?

  • Tom Petty

    @ me? Pls xpln.

  • By second hand & sell on - they keep their value pretty well, if you keep it clean.

    I had a Belle Mini Mix 150.

    Until it was stolen.

  • Day 4 utility room.
Bar some missing cupboard feet and shelf pins, pretty much done until we have a worktop & fitter!

Edit: I’m tired, now I look at the picture we also obviously need to sort some trim and an under-sink solution of some description. IKEA draws aren’t shallow enough to miss the waste.

  • I hope you get really small when you walk to the far end of that room.

  • Wait, that's your utility room? What does your kitchen look like?

  • Drawer fronts - stuck/screwed on to cover the gap.

  • Doors too conventional?

  • I haven't found any at less than about 75% of new (mostly Belle) which doesn't sit right with me, given (assuming) the warranty is not transferable and will at least be partially expired. Belle mini mix 130 is 300 at Toolstation and readily available so will probably just go with that and hopefully sell for c.£200 when I'm done with it.

The only other option is the B&Q 'build buddy' which appears to be identical to the Screwfix one but neither keep spares so I imagine resell value isn't as good.

  • Is that a label printer?

  • Currently a shithole!

  • A possibility, would like to use the space though ideally. Was thinking maybe flapping a drawer front down with a shelf.

@Airhead also a possibility (with a shelf). Might look a big odd with two square doors above a big drawer? 🤷‍♂️

@terlg yes... not sure what’s been labelled with it tbh, apart from the below which is actually incorrect.

  • Your space reminded me of the vid from "Don't Come Around Here No More".

  • Not sure why you would have a drawer there? It musty be the norm to just have doors there and then stack stuff up underneath until it frightens you to open it.

  • Drawer from to cover unused / unavailable space at the top and cupboard door below that? I’m pretty sure that’s the way our old kitchen was done. No real space at the top because of the sink.

  • Haha! Well that’s what we had before, trying to be more structured with the cupboard of enough fucking chemicals to make a bomb.

  • Our sink has a blank piece under it with doors below. My workshop has doors from worktop down, I prefer the workshop, more practical. :)

I often wish I had studied chemistry. I could just have a few basic ingredients and make all the stuff I have to store in different bottles.

  • Had to go an look at our new kitchen. We have doors now.

  • Well, I can see that now that I’ve watched it.

  • Thanks. Will be looking at it tomorrow (today) now.

  • Bathroom nearly done, I just have to decorate and get a shelf built.
Utility room side is a bit of an issue. The floor slopes down towards the bathroom (so the dividing wall is the lowest point) and the floorboards are in much worse condition than expected, as are the walls which have gone back to brick in some places.

Any suggestions for quick and easy floor fixes? The joists are a nightmare as are the planks, both all over the shop and I'm not convinced I can get them all up from out under some of the walls.
I was thinking building the floor up with a few layers of thin ply, maybe 3x9mm on one side and only 1x9mm on the other (that top layer would span the whole floor obvs) and screwed into existing boards.

I know removing all boards and then doing it properly would be best but not sure I have the time for that as I will have to do a fair walk of joist sorting.

Final floor will be cork tiles obvs.

  • Cutting news... Ok so far... just the long edge to do now.

  • Kitchen extractor fan. We have a hood and a fan. Could I keep the hood and replace the gubbins with this - it being quieter (possibly) and remote controllable.

Three speed extractor fan & Smart wire switch, sealing ring in connection box, protection class IP44.
Time delay and wind speed control. Time delay can be 1-30 minute.
    Voltage/ Frequency: 220~240V/ 50Hz, noise ≤ 33dB, operating temperature range: -20~60, power: 44/48/54W, airflow: 410/470/530m3/h.
Outer rotor motor inside, with Japanese brand NMB ball bearing, long working life over 50,000 hours.
Special design of joint to facilitate installation and dismounting; Easy installation and maintenance.

Or is there something else better?
