  • It depends how they are stuck down, and what they are stuck on, I guess.

  • It depends how they are stuck down, and what they are stuck on, I guess.

I'm not even sure they are stuck down... I will have a look.... also want to put a window above a door, dry wall, easy task?

  • Just punch it, then tidy the hole up.

  • DEFO up for trying that.

  • A question if you please?

Putting up a curtain pole above a 3.5m wide patio door which has a steel lintel above it. There appears to be no space above or below the lintel and no brick either side of it to get a purchase in. I get about 2cm of plaster dust then hit steel. I have already f*cked the existing plaster pulling off the old curtain track (old curtains were very light and plastic rail was just screwed to the plaster) and by drilling various places to try and avoid the lintel. Once I've tidied all of that back up two unattractive options present themselves. My question is, which is least shit?

    1. Purchase special drill bits and try and go far enough into the steel to to take a plug and screw. Thinking about that, will it actually be any stringer than just using short screws into the plaster?

    2. No More Nails (and possibly short screw as well) a batton across the whole width, actually it'll have to be in three sections as one would be prohibitively long and two would join in the middle where I need to fix a bracket) and attach the pole to that.

    I'm thinking 2.

  • fookin magnets

  • I'd go for:

    1. Use a multipurpose drill bit (or a metal drill bit) to drill a hole through the steel that is wide enough to accept a:
    2. Metal tap, which you run through the hole to thread it to accept
    3. Some slim bolts

This is all very simple- if the plaster is ~2cm thick then I'd just use a metal drill-bit, make sure the drill itself is NOT on hammer, then drill the holes where you need them.

Turning a tap through a hole is simplicity itself- it's like turning a corkscrew,

Screw in, back it out, whack your bolts in, wallop.

Putting up a curtain pole above a 3.5m wide patio door which has a steel lintel above it...

Is the window flush with the wall above, or does the lintel stick further out into the room? If it's an I-beam then there should be a hollow section (i.e., the concave bit of the I facing out into the room. Is there any way you can get at that to whack in a couple of wooden blocks and hang it from those? It would be messy, but dead solid.

  • I've bought a magnetic knife holder but don't have any choice where to put it - it'll need to go under the cupboards on a tiled section of wall. If I try to drill through the tile will they smash? Do I need a special drill bit? Once I have the holes, can I just use normal rawlplugs (sp?)?

  • Use these, drill through masking tape, and don't push too hard.

Normal plugs work fine (depending on what is behind the tiles - brick or plasterboard).

  • Remember to turn the hammer function to OFF.

  • I don't have one of those drill bits. What am I asking for in B&Queue?

  • And how do I know what width I need? Sorry for basic questions - I'm a complete newbie.

  • The width (at the widest point of the bit) should be the same, or ever so slightly smaller, than the plugs you're using. Asking for tiling bits will be fine.

  • I've used standard masonry bits to drill through tile quite a lot recently, they work fine in my view.

  • Got a bad smell in the bathroom. No leaks visible.

Any suggestions for things I should check, or recommendations for a plumber in Leyton way?

  • Thanks for the above cheps. Doesn't appear to be an I-beam as it's apparently the same depth beneath the plaster the whole way up. Fecking thing. Quite like the tap and bolt solution. wouldn't need to go in far.

    Have you flushed?

  • Ha ha ha TW2 words out of my mouth.

Either a blocked pipe or a dead mouse in the wall.

  • Caustic soda. Everywhere.

  • Did we cover mould yet? I know how but I want rid.
I need to redecorate because its fuckign awful and probably making us ill.

    What do I need?

    Bathroom and Kitchen = Bad

Front Bedroom, 3 weeks decorated, started growing but wasn't there before.

  • You need ventilation, and/or to reduce humidity.

  • No trickle vents and air bricks are covered.

Once redecorated get dehudifiers, whose responsibility are they generally landlord or tenant, it's not stipulated and clearly the previous tenants didnt have them.

  • Does anyone have a carpet knee kicker that I could borrow?
