Ouch. I wonder what caused that. I guess it'll now take a long time to rebuild in period-correct style.
Digging out a basement I reckon, looking at the sign on the right

Yep, something to cap it to prevent the cut face acting as a blade.

Currently on our 7th white swatch pot. Think this is the one!

F&B Wimbourne White for the bedroom is brilliant, creamy and expensive, like me

I use Liberon too, lol. Because I wanted pure.
As you say it must be an arse covering measure.

Have you tried slipper satin?

School house white?

Thanks, I managed to miss that and didn't want to make the obvious assumption. A little unfortunate for the company that their sign is in a press shot.
In Germany, pretty much every house is started with a pit for a basement. When I tell people there that here, basements are retrofitted under existing houses, it generally causes incredulity. :)

Strangely, The Guardian's report looked into planning applications but there's no mention of basements.
-
• #24836
That's technically a PA report the Grauniad carries. The application for a basement extension (among other things) is here:
Replacement of lower ground floor rear extension; lowering of floor slab at lower ground floor; excavation of basement storey under property and extension; replacement of two windows at ground floor with timber door set; replacement of window and door at front light well; and internal refurbishment
It was decided on the 30th April 2020. Maybe the researcher didn't know how to look for determined applications.

Biophillic architecture? More like an IKEA flat pack now lol
-

Good find. I was gonna suggest after your post above that it might have been caused by extension of an existing basement.
-
• #24840
I've just looked at some of the drawings and it turns out the lower ground floor is open to the garden, which is lower than the street, so strictly speaking it's a lower ground floor extension plus new basement. Well, it isn't any more, although I imagine they'll try to apply to have just about the same thing constructed along with the rebuilding of the house above.

My partner is from Poland and houses out there are all built with basements. Mostly used for storing food and wood etc as opposed to cinemas and wine caves but you get the same perplexed face when you tell them houses in the UK rarely have basements.
Even the old blocks of flats (pre-communist) have a little section of basement for each flat. -

the basement in our place is def one of its best features - even though it's dingy, dusty and slightly damp. just so nice having very secure bike storage like that
another DIY question relating to my painting - if trying to keep a section of raw plaster, is there any way we can seal/clearcoat it? just conscious it will be susceptible to scrapes, nicks etc. would be nice to retain the aesthetic but have some added practicality. not a big deal if this isn't possible - is only in the christmas living room

Maybe just good old PVA?

I'm tidying up the woodwork in my flat - we've got a lovely painted glass door panel that the pricks who previously owned the place got paint on because they didn't mask it. They definitely saved a lot of money on masking tape...
The glass is wavey so the old stanley blade scraper doesn't work so well - does anyone know of a good trick to remove paint from textured glass? Like is there a kind of non scratch metal wool that would do the trick?

Yeah thanks! Good advice.
I thought I'd stick something like this on top
