He already helped me with our house once and has taken a vow to never do it again despite us filling him full of kebab.

I’ll help again as long as it’s before next weds.

Next big project. Decide to replace this with similar or renovate it.
It has gaps so think we may replace with new but the cost hurts.

Been home ill for a while, have for some reason watched a lot of off grid builds in America. This channel is pretty good:

why replace, that's a beautiful floor, people would kill for that look, also, think of the planet?
-
• #19783
Could you not fill the gaps?
-
• #19784
@LeePaton jeez, 100% try and fill those gaps if they are a real problem. That floor is very, very nice.
Either that or rip it out and I'll pick it up, free of charge obvs ;-)

Yeah wtf don't rip that out! Sand, fill gaps, oil or lacquer on top. Or just leave it, looks awesome.
-
• #19786
If you do, I'd take it all off your hands!

I could not explain why as I have no answer, but I've been binging the same kind of stuff lately (though erring more towards solo/hand tooled cabin style builds in the middle of Canada rather than stuff with staircases).
There's also a channel I found from the UK the other day (TA Outdoors?) showing two guys, one slightly older, doing things like Saxon style houses (half-buried into the ground/wattle and daub walls/thatched roof etc) which was interesting. Also because they would stop to make a fry-up seemingly every hour, which is my kind of work. I usually play on mute at 2x speed which makes any voiceover more palatable - particularly as with a lot of US/Canadian ones there's usually some pretty heavy god chat.

To clarify if we replace it’s for other flooring the exact same.
I have zero experience with floors and some of the gaps are 1cm not sure if that’s fillable.
Flooring is roughly 35m2

some of the gaps are 1cm not sure if that’s fillable.
But if you rip it all up then you have a 35m-squared gap to fill! I can't see why you couldn't fill gaps. If it's well stuck down and not moving, I'd be hugely reluctant to pull it up.

1cm could be filled with strips of oak and glued in. Filler for smaller gaps. Maybe get a couple of quotes from flooring specialists? Would be a shame to rip that out. Sanding/filling and refinishing period flooring is very in, you shouldn't have difficulty finding local tradesmen who could do it for you.

plus it would be way cheaper than a whole new floor.

Burn it.

gaps = character, i just wouldn't even do anything to it! It's beautiful as it is!
-
• #19794
Ffs. Do not rip that floor up.
-
• #19795
Hiya. I would like to grab some wax pls.
How can I do this? -
• #19796
Thanks. I reckon I will leave the hooks on the floor and just shove the new tandem in a gap somewhere whilst I consider the merits of both systems

Amazon the stuff I've linked to is picobello; different brand but just as good. If you have a hunt around Amazon you should be able to find smaller kits with all the stuff you need. Don't worry about the colour matching too much with solid colours you can mix the individual sticks where the repair is needed using the heating thing. Also if you really mess it up you can scrape it off and start again.
EDIT, This is a useful guide as to how to use it for repairs:

I work around west London as a rule I'm based near Ruislip

That floor will be very stable you should be able to fill even the bigger gaps. Everyone else is right don't tear it up!

Lovely! Ta.
garage doors
right now, ours is a traditional up and over type which protrudes into the (small) garage about 5'8" off the floor, making it difficult to keep anything in the first metre or so of the space.
the obvious solution is an outwards-opening door type. i have learned to day that this is called a side-hinged door and i'd probably get the 1/3-2/3 type with a pedestrian door in. the garage won't be used for a car.
but then i read about some security concerns. anybody know anything about any of this?
