  • I can attest to the efficacy of these, my wife and I have moved a bunch of white goods when we renovated the kitchen and a heavy sewing machine, also lent the set out to friends.

  • I found they varied a lot. In particular if your neighbours employ a third party surveyor they know they can take the piss as you'll be paying for it, not them, and it's really difficult to contest the excessive fees.

The ones I experienced varied between about £450 and £1,100 (inc VAT).

  • My parents are going to have an extension built, it's going to be circa 75k plus VAT, so not a small amount of money. The builder they intend on using has said that if they want a contract then they'll have to come up with it. They asked their architect and he said he could rustle something up for £300+VAT. What have people done in this situation?

  • Buy a JCT contract ?

  • I think there are also free to use contracts available online. I used one 2-3 years ago but can't remember where it was from.

Anecdotally - our builders fucked off half the way through the build because they had a 'disagreement' amongst themselves and split the company up. Other than hiring lawyers and taking them to court I had little opportunity for recompense despite a pretty robust contract. Cunts.

    Not bitter...

  • If I decide to remove the plaster off the wall. (Lath and plaster) should/do I remove all the laths as well

I’m half tempted to rip out Rather than doing patch work. Wall is fine just thinking the effort I will take might as well do a good job

  • First attempt with this pre-mix plaster after 12 hours. Sluuump.
I’m assuming that the depth required (5-10mm plus holes) has overwhelmed the compound but hoping it stands back nicely once dry and a second pass fills it.

  • I've got this half arsed wall finished half arsed wall repair that I need to get sorted. It's a plasterboard wall that got caved in during a party. I don't know how the repair was done, but I'm guessing a square piece of plasterboard was spliced in to replaced the dented part. Problem is there is a hairline crack all the way around where this join was done, so a big square essentially. I don't know if a backing board was put in at the joint, or if scrim tape was used.

I'm tempted to sand it flat and get it painted up and hope the crack goes away? Can anyone advise what I should do? I really don't fancy taking out the panel and redoing it.

  • Paint won't cover it. I

would dig out the crack and re fill it (having sanded the area around it back and applied scrim tape). Ball ache but it's more likely to hold.

You could try putting some good quality filler over the crack, however you may need to refill it in about 6 months time.

  • Those types are a bitch. You're right to wonder how the board was fixed, in my experience it needs to have something solid bridging the join on the back side of the plasterboard to even have a chance of not cracking.

Since you don't want to have to remove it to find out I'd say the best way to try and fix it is with Toupret fine scrim tape and toupret fibacryl. Dig out the crack a to a v shape and apply fibacryl then scrim tape a bit more fibacryl and then feather it out with tx110.

Or scrub all that and line the wall, I would do that if I had to guarantee it didn't come back.

  • Laying some concrete slabs as a patio, well, extending a patio with a "pad" area.
    Looks pretty simple...

Concrete base >Pop slabs on top > Put filler in once dry > Profit.

Will need spirit level and wood frame for concrete base.

Am I missing anything? Difficulty level about a 5?

  • Is one of the slabs 13"?

  • Anyone wanting a track saw for £70, this is a 24hr offer from Rutlands. Might be worth sending a link to Santa :)

  • 2.5k to install a kitchen???? OH tried to get two quotes and the homebase approved fitter didn't even come out.

The fitted kitchen is poor. The kitchen design is bad to the point that a worktop cant be fitted as it is too long. The design is poor and makes the kitchen look lopsided.

  • Wouldn't that require for people? We only have two.

This is the most effective solution I've seen so far

  • Has the kitchen already been fitted?

Is the quote purely to fit the units or tiling/plumbing/electrics etc?

From what I've seen the approved fitters from places like homebase are hit and miss.

If you're not happy with the design go with another company. The only thing I would say is that all of the big DIY stores use the same manufacturers so the standard of their units is much of a muchness. As I've said before DIYkitchens.com are great but they don't offer a design service. I've recently fitted a Howdens kitchen for the first time in aaaaages and was amazed at how much they've upped their game, free design service and they can help you to find a local tradey (who holds an account with them) to work with.

  • no - you bring the "handles" together at the top and hold them in one hand. it's a two-person job.

  • The kitchen has been part fitted. Cupboards on walls and base units. Everything came pre assembled.

The quote seems to have been back of a fag packet. The guy who came out fitted a kitchen for friend of the OH. The OH never met him, so has a few texts on what she wanted. It is amazing how timid she gets in these situations, I didn't get involved as the OH wanted to it and this kitchen is becoming a saga as it has been a year in the sorting.

Was looking at DIY kitchens but OH turned them down as they don't have a show room where she can see the kitchens and a weekend trip was out of the question. I wanted Ikea, as buy it there and then.

    Am I being fussy?

  • Something that substantial should be decided by all affected parties I would think. Our kitchen was pretty much designed by me, with my wife’s contribution coming in the form of yaes and naes .

mould is back, has been at bay for a year since we cleaned it up, got a dehumidifier and a tube heater for the outside walls

underside of the wooden bed slats are the worst bit, fuckin annoyin
