made me think of this thread

  • Just applied for a vacancy as a deckhand in the summer /ships carpenter in the winter on this boat

    oooh yeah.

  • Oh man, that's pretty.

  • I was asked to take some photos of some of my work for the application for the above boat, and as they're all together in one place, I thought I might as well share them on here too. http://www.flickr.com/photos/samdoman/sets/72157625882032515/with/5428909419/

There wasn't much to take photos of, as the work has either been finished and taken away, or I couldn't get to it because the boats were being worked on. There's a few bits and pieces here anyway.

  • Bloody hell that's work should be very proud of. Your rounders bat is a bit ott though ;)

  • wow.
    pretty much stunning.

  • Lovely work, Sam. I do love a good dovetail. :)

  • I am a woodsman.

  • This popped up in a blog feed a few days ago. Some might think it's incredibly wanky but I thought it was a good read. It's more about the craftsman than about his work.

  • I'm a Master Stone Mason based in London

Any questions don't heitate to ask I'll try and add some interesting stuff from time to time.

New to this site and still getting the hang

  • Do it theres always loads of work all over the world for good stone masons

  • Have a look at the sort of work I do if you like

  • Amazing.

There is a stone mason in my home village (Tom Clark - apparently quite famous????) and I always look for his house, covered in gargoyles and faces! Stone masonry looks an amazing job, I tried my hand at carving stone once or twice as a child and I must admit I have no idea how you create a form from stone.

  • way to spend your first 3 posts :)

  • Hello crafty people. I'm a designer and maker of furniture, I got a commission to build a table but I don't have a workshop to do it in. Does anyone have a table saw, biscuit jointer, loads of clamps etc? Maybe someone knows someone with a wood workshop... the client and I are both Hackney way, so around here would be great. Found a dude who rents bench space for £60 a day but if anyone's got some forum discount connections I'm all over it. Some of my work is here....

  • My dream job is to be a stonemason for York Minster.

I lived in York for five years, it's a great place. If you ever went to Motosave, Halfords, or Drakes (the chippy near the Minster) you've probably met me.

You designed that three-way joint? I was given a link to your site by a friend a few months ago because I was thinking about something similar at the time. Amazing stuff!

I wouldn't call myself a craftsman at all, but I used to work as a spraypainter's assistant/general dogsbody and made/painted the scenery for Walking With Dinosaurs Live

I also helped to make this giant head.

And this piece for the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (which weighed literally a ton). I'm most proud of this. No pictures of it under construction unfortunately.

The sculpture above is made from fibreglass shells filled with a cork/resin mixture, and painted with a self-cleaning paint.

While I worked there I was also involved in making a few dozen little things for commercial expos, but taking photos was frowned upon and I had to delete them all (except the three above that I downloaded before the boss found out).

Now I'm doing an industrial design degree. I'm aiming to work in user centred design, but I'd also love to have my own little workshop making bespoke pieces of furniture/homewares. I have deep respect for any craftsperson, and the stuff in this thread is amazing.

  • Just found this thread & thought I might resurrect it.

I've been involved in arty/crafty type stuff for pretty much my whole life. Starting off with drawing from about 4 or 5, taking extra art classes at school in a desperate attempt by my teachers to improve my attendance. Doing several art/design things at various colleges for a while after school & eventually taking a photography degree, where I spent 3 years making B&W pictures of trees.

More recently I developed an interest in woodcarving, partly due to the switch to digital photography & enjoying more basic things I think. Unfortunately the carving has been on hold for the past few years.

It's something I'm hoping to get back into before too long, as I don't think I'm ever truly content unless I'm making something.

  • ^ Carving pics please.

  • I don't think I'm ever truly content unless I'm making something.

this is so true for so many people, the unfortunate ones don't even know it...
I really believe society as a whole benefits from productive people, by that I mean people who make physical material objects (I may well be using the wrong word there). yes it's great we've largely moved on from dangerous working lives that ruin your health if they don't kill you and leave you with no time or money for leisure, but there are downsides to what we have now, where so much is built on either other people / service, or the intangible value of numbers.

  • ^^ This is the last thing I made. Carved from Cherry. Around December 2009 I think.

Bloody hell, nearly 3 years ago now! That's even longer than I'd thought.

  • That's really good. I do love cherry as well. Every time I've tried carving it's been a dismal failure.

  • This is a relief carving of my old cat Jazz. Made in 2008 from reclaimed red mahogany.

  • ^ This is the only one that I've kept for myself.

  • BN, from your shed thread I know you've got the building skills, but your cat carvings are lovely, nice work dude, some good stuff going on there
