  • I've only recently discovered his channel and am still working through the back catalogue. I know he's put in a lot of graft to get there but his current set up "I only do the stuff I find interesting and let other people run my business" is the stuff dreams are made of!

I don't really get the whole power carving thing, yes it's quicker but things go matchstick shaped in the blink of an eye. Plus as far as I can see it's problematic using what is essentially a plane blade spinning at 1000s of rpm with a guard so a trip to a&e could also happen very easily!

  • Great video on paul sellers YouTube channel about restoring an old hand plane.
Alot of detail..and you dont have to go to the same level as him.
But these old items are serviceable and salvagable, for less cost of a modern new one. And much more satisfying and enjoyable.

  • Sorry for derailing the thread on a guitar building / Ben Crowe detour. He made a lovely guitar called 'Clarity' - I think it was one of the last things he did in his shed. Carves the top with one of those disks about ten minutes into here:

Like you say - it's lunacy! Even if you're skilled with those things, I imagine you still run a reasonable risk of massively messing up a very expensive piece of wood :)

  • He's using a saburrtooth disk there which are slightly less insane than one of these:

Basically 3 plane blades welded to an angle grinder disc.

  • Christ. That very much looks like it would grab and fly out of your hands :)

  • Thanks all for the thoughts! I have looked at the quangsheng one too and that's what i initially intended to buy, but figured if i was dropping 175 on a plane that's midrange, what's another 50 for the top of the range. I've been looking on ebay for used low angle jack planes and they don't appear to come up all too often

  • I have the Axminster low angle jack plane and it's very good.

  • Good enough for me! Thank you!

  • @edmundro thanks—yep, the board can be drilled all the way through. Would this be a case of getting M12 t-nuts, drilling 12mm holes, and then using the appropriate length m12 bolts?

Sorry to pester again but just wanted to clarify before I bought anything—would a load of around 70kg split across 8 T-nuts in a 25mm bit of plyboard be safe do you think? Can't seem to find ratings for these anywhere! again apologies if this is a dumb question

  • Tnuts are what indoor climbing holds/hang boards are put up with so if it’s body weight split across a few of them you should be golden.

  • Nice one much appreciated!

  • Walking stick commission time again. Have got hold of a lump of old fallow antler, coronet now ground down to form a thumb rest. Workmate set up in the garden, time for umpteen grades of sandpaper. The cut-offs might just make rings, never made one before, so I'll give it a try.

  • Mucho sandpapering and polishing later. Antler has been drilled and Hazel stick dowelled to press fit, just the glueing and final finishing to precisely fit antler to stick. Oh,and fitting a brass ferrule plus many coats of oil finish.

I am childishly chuffed with my first attempt at an antler ring...

  • Nice work, this is for a gift or side business or... ?

  • Only ever as gifts, the materials are pretty much free, but if I were to charge a reasonable labour rate my stuff would be prohibitive!

  • Yeah, I'm finding that with belts as well; there's no local market for handmade and can't bother with trying to set up for web sales. It's all either gifts or super cheap to friends.

  • If you were in the UK a stick/ring for belt barter would be possible. WARNING: a belt for me would involve rather more leather than I care to admit to.

The problem is that the only people who can afford handmade things are on the Golf Club thread and who wants those entitled twats to have them?

  • Heh, I would benefit more from such a trade than you.
Once in awhile (exempting current coviduation) I can afford this type of thing, down to living in a dump that we paid off years ago, no car and no kids.
I'm tempted to check out that thread but I'm always vaguely disappointed when I find out who plays golf, so I won't :)

  • Finished, all bar a few more coats of oil. For once I actually got the glued joint spot on.

The LFGSS golf club thread is not about golf, it exists mainly to gently mock those whose ostentatious spending would seem more at home in a golf club than a cycling forum.

  • The learning curve continues, thanks.
    That's some pro joinery there.

  • A bit more making, 20l dry(ish) bag to go inside a bikebacking handlebar bag. This means the bag can stay on the bike and then this just pulls out.

  • What I've always done with my Carradice bags, it just makes sense!

  • Bit of a stretch but looking for a drawing board like and architect would use. Thought some folks on this thread may be looking to offload one

My wanted thread is here: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/345908/#comment15211803

  • Just realised i never posted this here. Nowhere near on a par with some of the work being displayed in this thread, but I'm moderately pleased with a first attempt at something more than a few lengths of pine botched together with screws.

Got some ash from surrey timbers, tried the following things for the first time: laminating, dovetails (pretty ugly ham fisted first attempt with no consideration given to size/ratio), rebates with a chisel, chamfered edge with a block plane.

All done with hand tools (basic universal hand saw, chisels, block plane, no. 4 plane, square) except for the final sanding.

Learned lots in the process of course, next one will be much neater!
